Greased Lightning

The western half of the state was in a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 11PM last night. The Boston area was not covered in that watch. Yet nearly 2 hours after the watch expired, HUGE thunderstorms popped up in Boston.

I was jolted from bed around 12:30 in the morning with one loud crack. It was followed by a few more. I finally rolled over and opened my eyes and my apartment kept lighting up every few seconds. It was too loud to sleep through so I got up and went into the living room to sit on the sofa and look out the window.

It was a pretty impressive storm. For about 25 minutes or so the whole sky seemed like it was constantly lit up. Then as quickly as it started, it stopped. I went back to bed and woke up at 7AM to hear the news reports of quite a few house strikes in the Boston area.

Ironically, just days ago I was complaining to friends that we hadn’t had any good thunderstorms this summer. Last night’s storm also made me realize something. This was the first big middle-of-the-night thunderstorm Boston has had this year (beside that one single clap of thunder that woke me out of bed a month or so ago). Although I’m not afraid of the thunder/lightning, there is something about a night storm that makes me crave somebody to cuddle. It’s one of those things I like to share with another person. I guess I wouldn’t say it’s romantic…it just seems to create a moment.

But now that it’s morning and the moment is over – I’m perfectly content with my singledom!

Yeah, there was a housefire credited to the lightning strikes here too. Apparently the storm took place during the 20 minutes I was allowed to sleep last night because I know for a fact that I was up a LOT with the gruesome twosome here, and I heard nothing apart from the crying… oh well.

I LOVE thunderstorms. Beethoven weather! I was in absolute heaven last night. I’m sorry I wasn’t up at 12:30 to see the “light show”, but then, the storm had lulled me into a sound sleep. I actually remember a similar light show when I lived in WV, only it lasted for over and hour and I stayed up until around 1 in the morning just to watch. I just love the drama of it all. Does that make me a drama queen?

The storm hit Roslindale about 12:45 and went on a very long time, everything from violent cracks of thunder to long rolling booms, but prety much continuous. In the middle of it there was one brilliant lightning flash that went on for about fifteen seconds, just stunning. It can be intimidating sometimes, but I really love weather.

Chad got “shocked” out of bed in Braintree but I think it just rained in Norton, so I missed it…..

I would have gladly sent you the thunderstorm we had here a few weeks ago. About 1:30 in the morning the thunder started and was so loud I could feel it in my chest. It was rattling the windows and I could feel it in the floor.

Did that for a few hours and also poured down hard sheets of rain. I stayed up most of the night sitting on the balcony in the dark and just listened and smelled the rain.

My plane from CA touched down literally one minute before the rain hit the airport – we were being chased the whole way over Massachusetts by the lightning in the sky behind us, which looked really cool out the windows. By the time I was in my cab home, we actually had to detour because one of the underpasses we’d meant to drive through was flooded enough that it stalled the car 2 in front of us!! Still, somehow it let up enough by the time I got out at home that neither I nor my luggage was soaked. What a welcome back to the East, though! 😀
