A Swift Bitch-Slap Back to Reality

I wasn’t home from vacation for more than 2 hours on Wednesday night when I got a phone call from my brother telling me that my niece was back in the hospital (she’d been home a whole week). This time, one of her feeding tubes stopped functioning so she returned to the hospital for the operation to install a new one. That was supposed to take place early Thursday and the plan was for me to go to the hospital after work to visit and then take my brother out for dinner. But the surgery was delayed and she was still in surgery (or the recovery room) when I was supposed to visit.

Instead, I paid a visit this morning before work. She seems to be doing quite well considering she had surgery just 18 hours ago. While I was there it was obvious the anesthesia was wearing off and she kept trying to climb out of the bed with all of her tubes and wires. That kid sure is a fighter.

Oh, and instead of my peaceful weekend at home I’m heading down to the Cape tonight (again) to look after the dog so my parents can go on a little weekend getaway. At first I was dreading it. With all of the traveling I’ve done lately I was really hoping to finally spend a weekend at home. But the more I thought about it, the better this seems. I’ll get the run of my parents house: free TV, free DVD’s, free computer access, free central air and free food…all on Cape Cod. I suppose it could be worse.
