Walkie Talkie

I’ve always been curious to see how much walking I do on a day-to-day basis. Then a few months ago I read a study about national obesity levels and how rarely people in this country actually walk places. People hop in their car to go to the corner market and even then circle lots for the closest parking space. I’m ashamed to admit that I even do that when I have a rental car.

Well, Rich’s workplace has this healthy employee program that he participates in and they gave him a pedometer to measure how much walking he does. Being the curious fellow that I am, I asked to borrow it for a day. Yesterday was the first day I put it to use and I was quite pleased to realize that in an average day (simply going to and from work, and then any miscellaneous walking in my building), I walk nearly 5 miles.

In fact, my commute is over 1.33 miles each way. So, even if I plop my lazy ass at my desk chair and don’t move, I’ll at least walk over two and a half miles in a day (which I recall being substantially more than most Americans). I suppose that’s a good thing since I refuse to actually exercise. And I bet those numbers go up on weekends when I tend to walk around the city while I run errands or go to places.

However, any walking I do was put to waste last night when Ronnie came over to watch Sordid Lives (a hilarious movie I have on DVD that I force most people to see at least once). We ate chicken/penne/brocolli from Il Panino and sat on the sofa exerting energy only to adjust the volume on the remote control. AHHHHHHHHH – the way life should be.

Well its a good thing you are in the walking city…..especially when Steven Tyler tells you “To Walk this Way”, otherwise you’d look out of place, and your self esteem would plummet…..

And I must caution you about the exercising. I was a dedicated couch potato for years. Now…3 weeks into my gym project, I’m addicted to the feeling of working out. If I don’t go to the gym for a day I feel really awful about it.

I beg of you, Karl…don’t ever start any more exercising than you have to…or you’ll turn into one of those gym people…like I have.

Ah… Snarly Poppins. Practically perfect in every way! Walking substantially more than most Americans and EVERYTHING!
