Sing, Sing a Song

Now that I have a super-duper iPod with 7.5 times the memory, I have been burning ALL of my old CD’s onto my computer (and into my iPod). In the past, I only downloaded my favorite songs since I didn’t have enough space. Now I’ve burned EVERY song on EVERY CD I have and I still have enough space to add videos (my iPod is currently only half full).

Last night I was at Randy’s place and downloaded even more songs from his CD collection. It amazes me that just a few years ago all I carried around with me was a Sony Discman…which could hold ONE CD (between 10-18 songs). I would often carry additional CD’s with me so I could have some variety during my commute.

Now with an even smaller device I can carry my entire music collection (thousands and thousands of songs) plus movies.

I think I’m easily amazed. What I would love to be able to do, though, is go back in time to the 1980’s when Sony Walkman’s (for tapes) were growing in popularity and show a person then (who I’m sure would be wearing short shorts with white piping along the edges and white socks pulled up to his knees…and sporting the most fabulous feathered hair, of course) what his portable music options would be just over two decades later.

Have you ever asked your parents about their perception of the immense changes that have taken place during their lifetimes? Think of it–they will have grown up in a world where a telephone was immutably tethered to a wall by a cord, most people didn’t have television, air travel meant being vibrated by noisy propellor engines, and the only equivalent to a computer would have been a mechanical or very small electric adding machine, etc, etc. If you can be impressed by the changes in the last 20 years, think how much they’ve had to absorb.

I know! That’s a good point. The house I was raised in had a well in the basement for water (which ceased to be in use when I was alive). He was born (in the 1920’s) before WWII, before color movies, before TV, before computers. Yet here he is today loving his high speed internet access.

Think of the advances in porn alone!

Why does everything wind back to Porn? I guess if it were not for porn why would VHS or DVD or the internet exist right?

And Karl I am dissappointed that when you make a comment like this “(who I’m sure would be wearing short shorts with white piping along the edges and white socks pulled up to his knees…and sporting the most fabulous feathered hair, of course” that you do not add that picture of yourself in short shorts, long socks and feathered hair. How disappointed am I.

    Go Dave!

I’m so envious of your new ipod. I have finally begun to use my nonipod in earnest and it’s FULL and it’s a pain in the bahookie to change playlists to suit my mood. Wah.
