Making Music is Hard Work
Nah, I’m not talking about being a performer. I’m talking about managing ones own iPod. Life was so much simpler with my old Mini. The screen was broken so all I could do was “shuffle.” That eliminated a lot of unecessary stress. The Mini also had on 4GB of memory so I could only carry roughly 1,000 songs. Consequently, I only burned my favorite songs off of my CD’s. That way, it only played songs I loved and wanted to hear.
When I upgraded to the 30GB iPod, I had 7.5 times as much space to put music. I then went back into my CD collection and imported every song from every CD I owned (instead of just my favorites). This filled up nearly 60% of the iPod’s memory. Great.
But now I’m running into problems:
1 – the damn thing keeps playing songs I don’t like
2 – it takes forever to scroll from ’til Tuesday (which shows up as the first artist in alphabetical order because of the apostrophe) to the letter “T” where the chunk of my favorite artists can be found (Texas, The The, Tiny Lights, This Mortal Coil, Tori Amos, Transvision Vamp, Tammy Wynette, Tribe, etc…).
So, I keep going back and sifting through the 5,000+ songs to remove the ones I don’t particularly care to hear. It’s like an on-going night job. Remove this, add this, re-classify this. You know what? I don’t think we should have to buy iPods….I think Apple should PAY us because of all the work involved in using them.

Less is MORE. I heart my iPod Mini. They’re like collectible now.
If you use iTunes, you can just “uncheck” the songs that you don’t want to sync to your iPod. That way, they’re still on your computer should you want to, in the future, load them.
Also, scrolling…doesn’t your iPod have a “search” feature? Or that feature where if you scroll really fast the screen tells you what letter of the alphabet you’re on?
If not, you got a ghetto iPod, my friend.
Why not just create a playlist for your favorite songs or create playlists for different moods you’re in.. I don’t have my Ipod with me now but maybe their is a shuffle feature for playlists?
Heh, you have no idea how many times I heard “Voices Carry” because ‘Til Tuesday is first on my Artists list as well. If you accidentally press the button twice on the main iPod menu, it immediately launches into that first song. Bleh..
Oh, I do have the scroll feature that “jumps” from each letter of the alphabet…but you still have to scroll the wheel around a thousand times before that kicks in…and even still it seems you have to rotate the wheel a full circle for each letter…and then it goes so fast it bypasses the letter I want.
Playlists are what Randy keeps suggesting. But again, that’s MORE work creating the playlists in the first place.
Don’t get me wrong. I like the options. I just wish there was a way to default everything to my needs…without having to work on getting to that point. he he
Stop whining…Playlists take virtually no time at all to put together. Dont expect to add them all at one time. Do one as you think of the theme and the music that fits the theme. And yes, you can shuffle songs in a playlist so that it doesnt get redundant 🙂
karl i have never heard anyone complain more about a cool gadet.
maybe you should have gotten the zune. then you would have no one to provide any input on how to help satisfy your life. It could be worse!
I wish I could offer some advice on how to fix that thing, but I can’t. I do have an extra record player if it comes to that. I was thinking of getting one of those I pods but I think I’ll stick to my Sony discman that plays MP3 cd’s. In other words, thanks for saving me a hundred bucks, or whatever those things cost.
