Me and My Hippie/Earthy-Crunchy Parents

Ever since the late 1980’s (yes, over two decades ago) my parents would buy a new car and say “This is the last car we’ll ever buy. We’re getting told and will be dead soon so this is it. No more cars.”

Then every 2 to 3 years later (never longer than that) they tell me they want to come up to visit, and with them they arrive in a brand new car. And it’s always a brand new car because my Dad refuses to buy used cars (“You’re just inheriting somebody else’s problems.”)

Basically, every two to three years I get the same speech about this being the last car. So this past weekend, for Mother’s Day, it should have come as no surprise that my parents arrived in yet another new car…but this time it’s only been 1.5 years!

This time around, they’ve gone the environmental route and got a 2009 Prius. It’s actually pretty cool (I’ve been in one once before). And it’s so damn quiet! But since the thing doesn’t require a key and it is so quiet, my parents can never tell if they shut the car off.  For example, they visited my uncle on Sunday and left the car running for the whole two hours they were there.

But the best part was when my parents got home. They drove for 3 hours round trip, over 160 miles, plus they left the car running for two hours while parked….and after they got home from the trip they still had a full tank of gas.

My dad is almost as bad about cars. When he has purchased used cars he some how finds a way to “upgrade” them with new parts, accessories that are “cool” just so he can have something to say hes doing to the cars.
Then he realizes that oh he doesnt like the car, sell is for less than he purcahsed it for and loses value on all the junk he added.
Like when he purchased a used VW Beetle (new kind) several years ago. He added a spoiler so it would look “tuff”. Im like your driving a beetle how can you look tuff?
Oh and lets see the one before that was the very old like 1980 Toyota 4×4 truck. I think he rebuilt the truck from the inside out.. new seats, new seat covers, new bed (yes the entire bed had rusted out and had to be relplaced), new fenders (same deal), rebuilt engine, fixed the clutch, big new 4×4 tires once or twice. This was all while he was using the 4×4 as the easy truck to ride around in as it was smaller than his big ford truck (the other 4×4). Turns out that the big Ford diesel that was way too big was just as fuel efficient as the 25 year old 4×4 toyota small truck.
Finally he came to his senses and sold it and got the beetle. Oh wait I told that story already. He He

Oh yes and lets not forget, that my dad just had an accident yesterday (luckily hes ok) with his “new” Toyota Rav 4. This was the replacement for the beetle. I asking him if it was only so he could justify going to get a new car?
