همه سردخانه صنعتی از وجود یک نوع ماده سرمازا (مبرد) در یک مدار بسته استفاده می کنند. در سردخانه ها عمل سرد کردن به طور پیوسته و متوالی انجام می گیرد. تمام سرد کننده ها بر اساس سیکل تبرید عمل می کنند. در فرایند سرمایش با عملیات مکانیکی از یک کمپرسور برای متراکم کردن گازمبرد استفاده می شود که سیکل حاصل را سیکل تراکمی و گاهی سیکل تراکم تبخیری می نامند. علت نامگذاری سیستم تراکم تبخیری این است که عمل تراکم بخار و تبدیل آن به مایع سرمازا به وسیله کمپرسور و کندانسور انجام می گیرد و به این ترتیب انتقال انرژی حرارتی حاصل می شود.
کمیپرسور در سیکل تبرید دقیقا مانند قلب در بدن است، همان طور که قلب خون را در بدن به جریان می اندازد، کمپرسور هم مبرد را در سیستم به جریان می اندازد. مبرد در یک قسمت از سیکل، حرارت محیط خود را جذب کرده و در قسمت دیگر آن را دفع می کند. یعنی کمپرسور مبرد را در وضعیتی قرار می دهد که حرارتی را که قبلا از محیطی با فشار کم جذب کرده پس بدهد.
کندانسور سیکل تبرید از لوله های فین دار و فن الکتریکی تشکیل شده است و وظیفه آن کاهش دمای مبرد و مایع کردن آن است که در کمپرسور فشرده و داغ شده است. شیر انبساط مایع مبرد خروجی از کندانسور را به پودر تبدیل می کند .اواپراتور هم وسیله ای است که مبرد در آن به جوش می آید و در هنگام جوشیدن گرمای لوله و فین ها را گرفته و آن ها را خنک می کند. وقتی فین ها خنک شدند، فن هوای داخل سرد خانه را از لا به لای فین ها عبور داده و باعث خنک شدن هوای داخل سرد خانه می شود.
