Hey guys, so we’re soliciting some feedback for improvements/changes you’d like to see made in Hemenway. Below is a tentative list we’ve come up with – but please feel free to disagree, or add! You can either post your comments below, or send us an email at studentgov@law.harvard.edu

– Clearer gym hours on website

– Clearer class schedules on website

– Schedule of when basketball court is booked online to inform pick-up b-ball players

– Better athletic facility emails

–  Extend Hemenway hours on Fridays and Saturdays

–  proposal could be gradual, increase by an hour or two at first

–       More diligent repair and response to repair sheets

–       Tightening, lubricating, and cleaning bars/plates/etc.

Machine and Other Facility Sign Ups:

Cardio Machine sign-up issues:

General problem of people signing up for multiple slots

I would like it to open earlier on Saturdays and Sundays and to be open on holidays in which we have to go to class (although this is more the problem of HLS’s weird academic calendar than a gym-specific one).

I disagree with the proposal to erase names that have signed up more than two hours before. While I avoid the gym at the busiest times (when this probably happens), I think it’s important to not start a culture of erasing sign-ups that we don’t think should be there. If someone has the foresight to know when they will be at the gym to work out, why not let them? In a crowded gym like Hemenway, sometimes the choice does have to be sign up early too, or stop going at the busiest hours.

Also, I second the extended Friday/Saturday hours, as well as the desire to fix the broken TVs!

I would like to have wrist straps for heavy barbell lifting and a chain belt for attaching barbell weights for lifts such as weighted dips

    Bring back Cable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Open earlier on weekends.
Fix broken machines quicker (Hemenway is REALLY slow to fix things– including the current lack of TV channels)

Please bring back the cable channels! Without those, its way harder to motivate to get to the gym.

Could they install a water bottle filling station (even something similar to what is attached to the drinking fountain in the hark would be fine).

    1. There should be a place to do Olympic lifts – e.g. cleans, jerks, snatches – with bumper-plates. There isn’t a single place on campus this can be done.

    2. Make the computer by the entrance accessible to HLS students. What’s the point of having it there if you need an FAS login?

    3. Ab strap and jumpropes are gone. Replace them.

2L, the reason for the proposal to erase names signed up >2 hours in advance is because this is what is advertised — it’s unfair to have that as a policy and not enforce it. And I think it should be left in place and enforced — it’s ridiculous to have a race every morning where the slots are all signed up for first thing in the day.

I’d be all for an online sign-up system that automatically enforced when, and how many, slots you could sign up for.

I’d rather have it open later on weekdays. Also, as you can only hear the music in the weight area and not the cardio area, it would make sense if it was rock instead of pop.

Thanks for your suggestions, Student Gov will be taking these responses to Hemenway management and hopefully gym facility administration either before the end of the current or early next semester so hopefully we will also see some of these suggestions implemented Spring Term.

Please keep in mind budget issues, but we will do everything we can to make sure that the pressing changes that students have suggested would lead to a better recreational athletic experience on campus are made, especially the ones that don’t require much money.

Bring back Sarah B the Saturday morning yoga teacher and bring back more yoga classes. I’ve struggled to find a good teacher this year, there are fewer classes, and I really enjoyed her class.

There needs to be an honest way to work out for more than 30 minutes. I think HLS only machines, or machines that have hour slots would be great. People have different exercise abilities and needs – holding everyone to such a minimal time makes it really rough on people who are, say, training for marathons in the winter.

Also – the magazine racks are always empty! Let’s get some good magazines in there – Fitness? Self? Women’s and Men’s Health? People?

More spinning classes, and more advanced group classes would be amazing.

I agree with the comment about the olympic lifts. There needs to be some place or a time slot that allows for it somewhere on campus
