The City of Cambridge launches $100 million energy initiative

2

Last week the City of Cambridge announced the launch of the Cambridge Energy Alliance focused on efficiency improvements in the use of energy, water and transporation.  According to the website, the focus is to “reduce electricity demand by 50MW, a 15% peak load reduction, reduce annual electricity and water consumption by 10% city-wide; achieve a participation rate of 50% in each sector (e.g., municipal, commercial, residential); and reduce annual GHG emissions from the city by 150,000 tons (10%) by 2011.”

The initiative sounds like a good story of key stakeholders working together, specifically the state government, businesses and the community at large.  With $100 million at its disposal (provided by the Henry P Kendall Foundation, the Barr Foundation and the Chorus Foundation), it should provide a good first step at changing the general behavior and ultimately our process of how we use energy.

kudos to the City of Cambridge – we need more of these cities to take a stand and push on global warming.

the key is to make sure that all the relevant stakeholders are participating and engaging in the initiative – rather than just a pool of money being distributed..
