Adulty Things

Buying a condo is making me feel all adult and stuff. I don’t like it. I prefer living in denial, but that’s hard to do when one has to calculate how much one can afford in mortgage payments and how much insurance one needs on one’s new place. Boo on adultness.

I’m still flipping through my Martha Stewart book. In fact, I came across some instructions on how to fold a fitted sheet one morning before work that I immediately had to try out. Sadly, Roomie caught me trying to fold a fitted sheet in the living room, reading the book instructions, while I was in my bathroom with my wet hair up in a towel, eating cereal. Even more sadly, I never did figure out how to do it. Sadliest of all, the highlight of last weekend was finally getting the tiles in my bathroom as white as they were when we first moved in.

Speaking of sad, sad things, boo on the recent opinions coming down from the Supreme Court.

The “New” Me

My Martha Stewart’s Homekeeping Guide arrived in the mail last week. Remember, I’d ordered it in a fit of delusional thinking? New condo, new leaf and all that? Well, that lasted until I got through the first 20 pages of the tome…and realized I’ve been living in filth my entire life. Apparently everything has to be cleaned all the time and some things have to be additionally, super, thoroughly cleaned every week/month/year. If I followed her suggestions, I’d be doing nothing else. In fact, I’d be so busy cleaning I don’t know when I’d have time to make the mess to begin with! So I’ve opted to continue living in ignorant filth. I’m just glad I bought the book used so I don’t feel quite so guilty about spending money on it.

Speaking of which, I’ve been really good about not shopping lately and trying to save money for the condo. The only real frivolous purchase I’ve made this month was this dress, although it was incredibly cheap to start with and then went on sale so it doesn’t really count. I think I’ll wear it to one of my weddings in August. It’s from the Junior’s section though so I had to take a shot in the dark regarding the size. Hope I guessed right because if I didn’t, this dress will be falling off me (doubtful) or there will be some very unflattering bulging, if I manage to zip it up at all (sadly, much more likely)!

Also, for no particular reason, here are some random cute shoes I like at the moment.

Have a great weekend all! I’ll be heading to Fresno. Hope I manage to get in a good run this weekend!

The Trip that Wasn’t

Unfortunately, I never made it to Portland. I arrived at the airport at 5:15am Saturday morning only to find out that the flight was cancelled at some time between Friday night (when it was still showing an on time departure) and that morning. Waited paitently in the customer service line for an hour and a half to figure out an alternative. (Actually, after 45 minutes, I finally made it to the front of the customer service line. At that point however, they informed everyone that they were opening a “special” line for the passengers going to Portland. I, foolishly, move over to the special line, which although smaller, was also located in a special time warp. Although still third in line, I waited another 45 minutes for the people in front of me to be helped.) I eventually found out that the earliest I could get into Portland was 3:30pm, including a four hour layover in Seattle.

Once I got to Portland, I’d have to scramble to find a rental car (since I was originally supposed to drive with a friend) and then drive for two hours by myself to the beachhouse where we were spending the weekend, so the delay meant I would have a sum total of 22 hours with my friends — for which I was paying approximately $400 dollars. So I bailed, turned tails and ran. Sorry girls, I really, really tried!

The upside of the weekend was that since I’d planned to be out of town all weekend, I didn’t have any plans and was able to have a nice relaxing weekend at home. Didn’t get up early enough Sunday to go running, but did bike for about an hour on Saturday. Saw Ocean’s Thirteen (it was okay) and stopped by Pinkberry!

29

So I turned 29 on Tuesday. All in all, it wasn’t nearly as traumatic as I had feared. Being a workday, I didn’t have any special plans, but T surprised me by taking the night off work and having a lovely bath drawn and dinner planned when I got home.

Our condo purchase is moving along, and while it’s all gone fairly smoothly, I find the entire process nervewracking. So much money! And what if something happens and escrow doesn’t close as planned? Ack! We’ve already submitted our intent to vacate our apartment! We could be homeless!!

Poor T is discovering the hard way that I don’t deal well with uncertainties. I had a slight meltdown this past weekend when our mortgage broker called and asked us to submit additional documents, which I couldn’t do right away because we were out and about. Fortunately, T talked me down from the ledge and made me realize I was being anxious just for the sake of being anxious. (Personally, I think it’s the job. I remember once being a rather cool and collected individual. Although my closest family and friends tell me that perception was more self-delusional than accurate and that I’ve always been somewhat spastic.)

Heading to Portland this weekend for a get together with some of my girl friends from law school and to celebrate another one of us (this time Roomie) turning 30. We had our first reunion a couple of years ago when C. turned 30 and we all realized our 30th birthdays were spread far enough apart that we could get together every few years to celebrate and support each other as we entered our thirties.
