Technology review has an interview with Tim Brown, CEO of IDEO, the company that designed original Apple mouse, the Palm V and Handspring Treo handheld computers, the Lilly insulin pen, etc. He stresses on the point that handhelds are for shot time operations, while desktop work is longer and the apps have to be designed in that way and also transition between interfaces should be seamless. The designer should innovate and also be backward compatible with current systems. Feature creep is happening because designers want the app to do everything, and not what the it is supposed to be best at. The user wants the designer to organize data by understanding what he wants. Using arcane interfaces for customization is only for minority users. Normal users need simplicity, while the minority power users need power, which can be hidden inside. The devise should also provide a transition path for the normal users to become power users. Experience design is noticed by its presence, while usability is by its absence. Ideo site showcases some of its interesting design concepts.
