Comcast cutting deal with BitTorrent

Comcast announced today that it will work with BitTorrent to treat the P2P traffic equally. (See here for the announcement)

However, though Comcast said it will no longer (by the end of the year) discriminate based on traffic using the BitTorrent protocol, it’s unclear what this means for other types of traffic.

It’s also unclear what it means for other ISPs, who could discriminate against p2p content just as Comcast did.

I think this is very dangerous in so much as it may reduce the FCCs compulsion to take action on this issue. However, at least initial comments from the Chairman lead me to believe that isn’t so, still, it is troublesome. (and no I can’t recall where I read that…)

Although I guess kudos to somebody at Comcast for hatching this plan.
