Gentlemen? Meet the “bitch from Calgary”

She takes on Leo Strauss, one of the brilliant Ernst Cassirer‘s most famous students.

See this Adbusters article, which presents a graphical map of Strauss’s current influence. Then don’t miss Danny Postel’s interview with Shadia Drury (the very excellent b. of C.) in the current Open Democracy:

On this perverse view of the world, if America fails to achieve her “national destiny”, and is mired in perpetual war, then all is well. Man’s humanity, defined in terms of struggle to the death, is rescued from extinction. But men like Heidegger, Schmitt, Koj

  1. There was a great interview with her back in early May on CBC – it got me doing some blog entries on Strauss and his influence on the PNAC boys at the time. She is a real dynamo. One of these days when I have thecombinatyion of time and money I’ll get her book “Leo Strauss and the American Right”.

It’s a hoot to read the reviews of this book on Anazon.ca – obviously the Rushies crawled out from under their rocks to go defend their creed. 🙂 I figure if it p***ed them off that much it’s worth reading (lol).

  2. Well now that was interesting – that last sentence contained three astericks replacing the letters iss – everything after the astericks was bolded and they were deleted.

  4. Hey, my piss came out alright. Whassup? 😉 !! (Or, I see: you mean the asterisks made everything bold…)

    Anywho.
What I find interesting: I don’t like conspiracy theories, generally speaking. And when I first read the Adbusters thing, I thought, “hm, interesting, but …” I didn’t know about Drury’s work at all. But having read about her work now, I’m much more willing to accept that Strauss has had incredible influence. And what really kills me is that it’s a fairly exclusively male cabal — imagine if Hannah Arendt had accepted his attentions: what would Strauss have come up with instead?? How would things be different had the intellectually beautiful Arendt found her way to finding in Strauss a suitably attractive mate? The Dark Prince or whatever he’s called (Perle) might be playing a completely different game. Who knew that so much could depend on love? Why don’t we know that everything depends on love?

    Finally, here’s an asterisk test.
    The same sentence:
    Fin***y, here’s an asterisk test.
