Beansec tomorrow @ Middlesex Lounge

Tomorrow is Beansec! For those of you who haven’t heard Zach Lanier has joined us as a full time host of the event. I am semi-retiring for this semester due to classroom obligations but will try to show up for the first half hour or so. I’ll definitely be back in the spring semester!

If you haven’t done so already add the Beansec calendar feed to your favorite scheduling program to make sure you don’t miss out.

Still not sure what Beansec is? Let me explain:
BeanSec! is an informal meetup of information security professionals, researchers and academics in the Greater Boston area that meets the third Wednesday of each month. Unlike other meetings, you will not be expected to pay dues, “join up”, present a zero-day exploit, or defend your dissertation to attend.

It is a great way to meet other security folks from the area in a relaxed atmosphere with absolutely no vendor pitches or formal presentations. Beansec is food, booze and security geeks. Here is a peek at last months Beansec where we had about 30 or so people show up.

Beansec 08 08

The August 08 Beansec was a great success! We filled the entire club with people till well past 10pm. A special thanks goes out to Zach Lanier and Dan O’Neill who picked up the tab for drinks and food in Hoff’s absence. If you see them online or in person make sure you say “thanks” too!

Beansec: Now at Middlesex Lounge

I really love the Enormous Room but recently they decided to cut off the food supply upstairs. This caused the Beansec team to ponder for a while and we have decided that we will now make Middlesex the new home of our humble little gathering. The food at Middlesex is good and the seating is really flexible.

All that said I hope to see you guys at Middlesex Lounge this Wednesday for Beansec.

Beansec June 2008

Will be held at Middlesex Lounge in Central Square, Cambridge MA on June 18th, 2008. The Enormous Room is all booked up and so we are going to be at our backup location. We are considering making this a permanent move so come check it out.

Beansec this Wednesday!

Yo! BeanSec! is once again upon us. Wednesday, February 20th, 2008.

BeanSec! is an informal meetup of information security professionals, researchers and academics in the Greater Boston area that meets the third Wednesday of each month.

Unlike other meetings, you will not be expected to pay dues, “join up”, present a zero-day exploit, or defend your dissertation to attend. Map to the Enormous Room in Cambridge.

Enormous Room: 567 Mass Ave, Cambridge 02139. Look for the Elephant on the left door next to the Central Kitchen entrance. Come upstairs. We sit on the left hand side…

Don’t worry about being “late” because most people just show up when they can. 6:30 is a good time to aim for. We’ll try and save you a seat. There is a parking garage across the street and 1 block down or you can try the streets (or take the T)

In case you’re wondering, we’re getting about 30-40 people on average per BeanSec! Weld, 0Day and I have been at this for just over a year and without actually *doing* anything, it’s turned out swell.

We’ve had some really interesting people of note attend lately (I’m not going to tell you who…you’ll just have to come and find out.) At around 9:00pm or so, the DJ shows up…as do the rather nice looking people from the Cambridge area, so if that’s your scene, you can geek out first and then get your thang on.

The food selection is basically high-end finger-food appetizers and the drinks are really good; an attentive staff and eclectic clientèle make the joint fun for people watching.

Look for the red elephant!

Beansec! December 2007 (location change!)

BeanSec! is an informal meetup of information security professionals, researchers and academics in the Greater Boston area that meets the third Wednesday of each month.

For December’s Beansec we are going to change up the venue. While we love the ER someone has booked a private party on this month’s third Wednesday so we will instead meet at Middlesex Lounge. Directions to our new meeting space here

Middlesex Lounge is literally a few blocks down the street (Mass Ave) towards MIT. There is food available there plus, and I know this is something people have asked for in the past, beer on tap! Yes draft beer will be available as well as a full bar.

I say again, BeanSec! is hosted the third Wednesday of every month. Add it to your calendar.

Come get your grub on. Lots of good people show up. Really.

Unlike other meetings, you will not be expected to pay dues, “join up”, present a zero-day exploit, or defend your dissertation to attend.

BeanSec Thanksgiving Edition

This year BeanSec’s November meeting falls the day before Thanksgiving. This causes the triumvirate to consider whether to make a special exception and stray from our solid “3rd Wednesday of the Month” formula or try and weather one of the busiest drinking nights of the year. A difficult question that requires some thought and perhaps some background.

One of the most successful aspects of Beansec is the organic and informal setting. It is even more “un” then your average unconference like BarCamp. We don’t even have presentations. People from the industry just sit around and drink. Sometimes they talk shop, sometimes they don’t. Getting everyone to meet was chaotic since we didn’t want to introduce a mailing list or require people to “sign up” in any way. So we introduced the idea that we would meet on a specific night of every month.

So with that in mind we will make the Thanksgiving Edition a sort of “bye” week for the founders. I think I will be the only one even in town and I may or may not make it that night. But I am assured that the Enormous Room will be packed with random people. So if you want to just come out and socialize come hang out at the ER for the night. You will have to buy your own food and alcohol this time around but I promise we will be back in regular form next month.
