The Freedom To Tell The Truth: Cheers to SunnComm

A Princeton student was threatened with a lawsuit because he discovered and published information about how to circumvent a music CD’s copy-protection scheme by pressing the “shift” key.

I was going to rant about the sad direction we are taking with this kind of approach, about how we must protect researchers’ freedom to tell the truth. I was going to complain about the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. Instead, I got preempted by the SunnComm CEO, who withdrew the threat of a SunnComm lawsuit and said:

“I don’t want to be the guy that creates any kind of chilling effect on research.”

Cheers to SunnComm and specifically to Peter Jacobs, their CEO. Thank you for making the right, ethical decision.
