Wine Access takes a rigorous yet sophisticated approach with a method they call ‘sensory science’ with their goal being to ideally match the wine to the consumer who has yet to discover but will surely love the selection.



With Wine Access there is no subjectivity in their vetting process. It is replaced with simply objectivity. Rather than having the wines judged based upon personal tastes, the judges expertise is used to score the wines based on fact such as the concentration of the wine, the balance, the complexity of the wine, the length and the texture. For the team, this will decide if it will be worth being presented to the clients who buy from them or not.

This also means that there are wines that they don’t particularly enjoy the taste of that will still pass the scoring and make it into the store as opposed to a wine they may very much enjoy that will receive a low score and not make it in. Because everything is objective, there is very rarely any disagreements between the members. They feel that ‘sensory science,’ because it is a science only using the palate, is much more objective and brings a scientific rigor to the process allowing the subjectivity to be taken out of it.

The wines are judged on a 100-point scale and only the ones that receive a 90 or above will be used in the store. The wines that they use are from everywhere throughout the world with their focus being small and oftentimes the cult makers that no one can find easily. The value is a major part of the score being crucial that the wine has the capability to overachieve for its cost. It needs to be seen by the consumer as impressive no matter what the price on the bottle is.


The next phase of the sensory science is when the team works on the profiling with an intensity scale that they have devised in order to score the six major attributes for wine: fruit intensity, tannin, oak, acidity, sweetness, and body.

Then begins the descriptive types of analysis such as the key attributes like herbaceousness, red fruit, spice, blue fruit, meatiness. They will discuss precisely which food to pair with including your cured meat or red meat all the way to shellfish and then work towards what types of temperatures it should be sipped at or whether it will require a certain period of time before opening.


It sounds really outlandish in that Wine Access goes above and beyond but they’re not only attempting to make the most superior tasting wine notes available, they are actively trying to develop the AI or Artificial Intelligence of wine systems to assist the wine community in confidently finding wines that they will absolutely enjoy drinking.

With a lot of online companies who have attempted to profile their customers, they do so in a half-hearted way by submitting questionnaires or sending a wine vial as a sample along with a comment postcard to reply with. These tactics don’t appear to be very successful. Wine Access goal is to work on building up the database of the wines they want to profile in conjunction with their consumer purchase database and by coordinating all of the information that they collect, they will have developed their AI system which it is their hope will give them the ideal recommendations for customers.

The A1 system is going to see what a customer’s repurchase history is and then match them up with something that would fit that same profile but opens them up to a whole new world and new experience for them, something that they may have never even considered before.

They want to take wine drinking to the next level for those who enjoy the experience but are not experimenting, those who are stuck in just staying with what they are comfortable with. What Wine Access is currently doing without the AI is selling really good wine that is over delivering for the price that the consumer is paying for the bottle that they get. What they want to do once they implement the AI system, is sell really good wine that still over delivers for the price point of the bottle that you get but you also really enjoy the new experience that you get with it. They want to stand out in their online presence over their competitors and do something that no one else is doing, that no one else can do, and that consumers won’t be able to find with any other platform.

People, who are wine connoisseurs, are always interested in trying new and exciting wines from all over the world. Wine Access is an opportunity to go outside of their comfort zone and try things that you may not have ever given yourself the opportunity to. These wines are scientifically tested so they have to be good.
