Overview
The Cyberlaw Clinic regularly provides resources to those facing questions about artificial intelligence and related technologies. This work emphasizes ethics and governance issues that arise in the context of research and business activities that incorporate dynamic algorithms and machine learning. Much of this work is closely tied to the efforts of the research communities at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society and the MIT Media Lab, undertaken with support from the Ethics and Governance of Artificial Intelligence Fund. Specific areas of focus include the use of machine learning and algorithms in the criminal justice system and the implications of technical risk assessment tools used by government officials to facilitate determinations about bail, sentencing, and parole.
The Clinic also advises clients regarding intellectual property implications of artificially intelligent systems. The Clinic has structured business deals and offered risk evaluations and advice on the use of creative works to train machines and the IP status of creative works generated by machines.
