Fishing, Fenway and all that Jazz

Posted by glasscastle on 27th June 2003

Yesterday I took a break from Blogging to remind myself that there is a "Real
World" out there somewhere. Bobbing
on the Atlantic off Nahant
at dawn
after the delicious, elusive "stripers", baking in the bleachers
of Fenway
watching Pedro pitc
h an afternoon start against the hapless Tigres,
and mooning over Marta Gomez latin jazz at the Regatta Bar, I overdosed on
reality (and sun) and have hastily retreated to my air-conditioned corner of
cyberspace….

William Gibson on George Orwell

Posted by glasscastle on 26th June 2003

William Gibson (one of my faves) relates George Orwell (100th anniversary), Big Brother and 1984 to US Govt.’s Total (now Terrorist) Information Awareness.

“This outcome may be an inevitable result of the migration to cyberspace of everything that we do with information.” from “NY Times 6/25”

Quote of the Day

Posted by glasscastle on 26th June 2003

The big local Boston story today is Anna Gitlin,
a 25-year old woman who, trapped in a traffic jam and late for work,
rammed a cop
trying to redirect her.

"I don’t care who (expletive) died. I’m more important,” Gitlin twice
screamed in broken English.

Local outrage peaked when it came out Gitlin was Russian. Don’t you HATE
being late for work?

Impatient Web searchers measure Web sites’ appeal in seconds

Posted by glasscastle on 26th June 2003

A Penn State study released today shows most users of search engines view not only just the first page of results, but only examine the first result on that first page.

‘About 55 percent of users checked out one result only. More than 80 percent stopped after looking at “three results”.’

Eli, Eli, Oh

Posted by glasscastle on 25th June 2003

Is it just me or is anyone else dreading a Bush – Kerry matchup
in ’04. Perhaps it’s just the sour grapes of an old Harvard man at the
prospects of seeing two Yalies face off.  And Bill makes three.  And
Hillary….

Apple Unveils iCheese Grater

Posted by glasscastle on 24th June 2003

Apple’s
new G5 desktop computer
has been dubbed the "Cheese
Grater" model because it looks, well, like a cheese grater.  Billed
as the first 64-bit PC, Apple claims it leaves even the fastest current
PCs in the dust.  However, Slashdot has a post
questioning Apple’s benchmark claims.
