John Palfrey announces the addition of Dwight McInvaill, Director of the Georgetown County Library, to the DPLA Steering Committee.
“I am writing with the good news that Dwight McInvaill, Director of the Georgetown County Library (South Carolina), will be joining the Digital Public Library of America Steering Committee…

Since 1996, Dwight McInvaill has served as the Director of the Georgetown County Library, a public library system in rural South Carolina.  Before coming to the Georgetown County Library, McInvaill served as a reference librarian in North Carolina.  McInvaill is on the board of the Association of Rural and Small Libraries.  He previously chaired the Rural Libraries Committee of the Public Library Association and the American Library Association’s Taskforce on Rural School, Tribal, and Public Libraries.  In 2009, McInvaill was one of 10 librarians honored with an “I Love My Librarian Award” from the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the New York Times.”

Josh Fischman discusses arXiv’s future.
“The pioneering effort to share scientific research without the restrictions of journal prices and embargoes, arXiv, turns 20 this month. Its founder, the physicist Paul Ginsparg, reflects on his effort “to level the research playing field” in the August 11 issue of Nature. That’s the kind of expensive journal Mr. Ginsparg originally wanted to work around. We can share some of his published thoughts here.”
