In a letter dated January 30, 1787, to his good friend James Madison, Thomas Jefferson used a Latin phrase: “Malo periculosam, libertatem quam quietam servitutem.” This phrase could be translated into “I prefer the tumult of liberty to the quiet of servitude” or perhaps as “I prefer liberty with danger than peace with slavery.” 中文大概意思就是:“我寧可要有風險的自由,也不要做和平下的奴隸。”
