A friend of mine commented recently, “In Germany, criticism of bureaucrats is illegal. Blind obedience to their decisions is the rule. Otherwise, punishment is meted out, as happened to you when you were fired from the Technical University of Munich. Is it surprising that a country with such attitudes produced the Nazis in 1933, and is producing them again seventy years later?”
I was shocked that she could say such a thing. “But weren’t the reasons for my firing quite different?” I said.

Eine Bekannte bemerkte neulich, „In Deutschland, Kritik an Bürokraten ist illegal. Kadavergehorsam ist die Regel. Sonst muss Strafe sein! Das ist es, was dir passierte, als die Technische Universität München dich feuerte. Ist es also eine Überraschung, dass ein Land, wo solche Einstellungen herrschen, die Nazis in 1933 hervorbrachte, und dass dieses Land sie noch einmal siebzig Jahre später hervorbringt?“
Ich war darüber schockiert, dass sie so etwas sagen konnte. „Aber waren die Gründe zu meiner Entlassung nicht ganz anders?“ sagte ich.

“Neighbor: ‘After the plate glass window was broken with a rock, we were all afraid that something more would happen. They could have thrown a bottle or something – a Molotov cocktail. Because the Israeli flag was hanging there, the thing with the plate glass window happened – so you could say he brought the damage on himself.’ Dieter T.’s business started going downhill. The financial situation was dreadful. Then the bureaucrats from the local authority’s food inspection department came. His kosher packaging was printed in English, just as it is in Berlin’s largest department stores. However, the food inspectors forced him to pay a fine of 430 euros ($500.00) because the labels weren’t in German. Even the mayor of that particular Berlin borough was involved in that decision.”

„Nachbarn: ,Nachdem die Scheibe eben mit einem Stein eingeschlagen worden war, hatten wir schon alle Angst, daß noch mehr passiert. Es hätte ja auch mal eine Flasche fliegen können, so ein Molotowcocktail. Die Fahne hing und dann war das mit der Scheibe und da hat er sich denn selber mit geschadet’. Die Geschäfte des Dieter T. laufen immer schlechter. Eine finanzielle Misere. Und jetzt kommt auch noch die Lebensmittelaufsicht. Seine koscheren Fertigpackungen sind auf englisch gekennzeichnet, so wie sie übrigens auch in großen Kaufhäusern verkauft werden. Aber die Lebensmittelaufsicht verhängt ein Bußgeld, insgesamt soll er 430 Euro zahlen. Die Bezirksbürgermeisterin hatte selbst ein Auge drauf”.

I didn’t actually see it, though. All right, his shop window was spit on, but so was mine. You clean it up and forget about it. After that nothing happened for a while except that some kids kept showing up every day and were constantly just joking around. We didn’t try to talk to them. You don’t want to get into a confrontation with six or seven teenagers. What’s the point of doing that?’ In December last year, while the Israeli Prime Minister visited the city, somebody through a rock through the store window one night. They never caught whoever did it.”

Die Scheibe wurde bespuckt, das wird meine auch, dann macht man es weg, dann ist das Thema erledigt. Jeden Tag war gar nichts weiter, außer daß die sich hier zusammengestellt haben, rumgescherzt, also wir haben sie ja nicht angesprochen, Sie werden sich ja nicht mit sechs, sieben Halbwüchsigen auseinandersetzen wollen. Warum auch?’ Dezember vergangenen Jahres: Während der israelische Ministerpräsident die Stadt besucht, fliegt nachts ein Stein in die Scheibe des Ladens, die Täter werden nicht gefasst.“

In the Berlin district attorney’s office several investigations are being carried out into the conduct of ‘persons unknown,’ but the chances of finding those who harassed Dieter T. are slim. Later, young men of Arab extraction made coarse remarks and tore down the Israeli flag in front of the shop. One of the women in the neighborhood ran after them, but most people just watched, and did nothing.”

Die Chancen die Täter zu finden, stehen schlecht. Jugendliche arabischer Herkunft pöbeln, reißen die Fahne ab. Einmal ruft eine Nachbarin ihnen hinterher, aber die meisten schauen einfach schweigend zu“.

„Statt sich gegen Drohgebärden zur Wehr zu setzen, versuchen einige Anwohner auf Dieter T. einzuwirken. Er solle doch die jüdischen Symbole wieder entfernen. Seine Kunden sind verunsichert. Dieter T. war jahrelang einer von ihnen, man half sich gegenseitig, aber seitdem er sich mit seinem Laden offen zum Judentum bekennt, sehen einige Probleme“.

Eine Bekannte bemerkte neulich, „In Deutschland, Kritik an Bürokraten ist illegal. Kadavergehorsam ist die Regel. Sonst muss Strafe sein! Das ist es, was dir passierte, als die Technische Universität München dich feuerte. Ist es also eine Überraschung, dass ein Land, wo solche Einstellungen herrschen, die Nazis in 1933 hervorbrachte, und dass dieses Land sie noch einmal siebzig Jahre später hervorbringt?“
Ich war darüber schockiert, dass sie so etwas sagen konnte. „Aber waren die Gründe zu meiner Entlassung nicht ganz anders?“ sagte ich.
Sie hat nur gelacht.

A friend of mine commented recently, “In Germany, criticism of bureaucrats is illegal. Blind obedience to their decisions is the rule. Otherwise, punishment is meted out, as happened to you when you were fired from the Technical University of Munich. Is it surprising that a country with such attitudes produced the Nazis in 1933, and is producing them again seventy years later?”

„Nachbarn: ‚Es gab hier auch vor dem Hause Zusammenrottungen von jungen Leuten, die eindeutig zu seinem Laden gesprochen haben und gezeigt haben. Das Auto soll hier gestanden haben, da sollen auch zwei Leute drin gesessen haben. Mein Mann hat das gesehen. Wir haben ihn darauf angesprochen, sind reingegangen, haben gesagt, du Dieter, was ist denn da mit den Leuten draußen, A ja die kenn ich schon, hat er gesagt. Also das war nichts Neues’“.
