“These three statements by secondary school pupils in Kiel, shortly before their university entrance examinations, sum up the task of education sixty years after Auschwitz: it’s a question of making it clear why this topic has special meaning for Germans; it’s a question of whether this greatest of all crimes against humanity could be repeated under other circumstances; it’s a question of investigating whether it was historically unique and asking what was going on in the minds of the people who did the killing – and in the minds of those who looked the other way.”

„Diese drei Äußerungen von Kieler Oberschülern kurz vor dem Abitur bringen die Aufgaben der Erziehung 60 Jahre nach Auschwitz auf den Punkt: Es gilt zu klären, warum das Thema sehr wohl für Deutsche eine besondere Bedeutung hat; ob dieses größte Menschheitsverbrechen unter anderen Vorzeichen wiederholbar wäre; ob es historisch einzigartig war und was in den Menschen vorging, die da mordeten – und in jenen, die wegsahen.“

“ ‘I really consider that period as the past, as history, and it has nothing to do with me. It’s nothing that I’d ever let myself feel guilty for,’ another secondary school student wrote. A schoolmate indicated she was deeply shaken by a visit to Auschwitz, ‘but as soon as you turn on the television at home, you can see similar suffering all over the world: the war in Iraq, for example, which has cost many people their lives, or starvation in Africa, where children especially are affected… That kind of current suffering touches me more than suffering that can no longer be changed’.”

„Erzählt es euren Kindern,“ in den Schulen und an Universitäten wie der Technischen Universität München – 3
„»Ich betrachte diese Zeit wirklich als ›vergangene‹ Geschichte, die mich persönlich nichts angeht, beziehungsweise für die ich mir niemals die Schuld anhängen lassen würde«, schreibt ein anderer Gymnasiast. Eine weitere Mitschülerin zeigt sich tief erschüttert von einem Besuch der Gedenkstätte Auschwitz, »doch sobald man zu Hause den Fernseher anschaltet, ist ähnliches Leid überall auf der Welt zu sehen: der Krieg im Irak, der viele das Leben kostet; Hungersnöte in Afrika, von denen besonders Kinder betroffen sind… Das aktuelle Leid geht mir näher als das, welches man nicht mehr ändern kann.«“

“The young man who wrote those lines harbors no sympathy for neo-Nazis, and he would be horrified if anyone said that he did. He was simply expressing – with an extremely unfortunate choice of words – an attitude that many young people have today in Germany: ‘What does the Third Reich, or Nazism and the murder of the Jews, have to do with us?’ Among these young people, there is widespread unwillingness to be made responsible for atrocities committed in a past that already seems to them to be very distant.”

„Der junge Mann, der dies formuliert, hegt keine Sympathien für Neonazis und wäre entsetzt, wenn man sie ihm unterstellte. Er drückt nur in extrem unglücklicher Wortwahl eine Haltung aus, die viele junge Leute heute einnehmen: Was hat das »Dritte Reich«, was haben der Nationalsozialismus und der Mord an den Juden mit uns zu tun? Der Unwillen, für Gräueltaten aus einer schon sehr fern wirkenden Vergangenheit in Haftung genommen zu werden, ist weit verbreitet.“

“Kiel – A young man in a history course for advanced students in the final year of public secondary school here wrote about the Nazi period and the Holocaust as follows: ‘Without a doubt this was one of the most horrific chapters in the history of human kind since the start of civilization, but do we have to remain forever in an attitude of subjection and, until the end of our days, apologize for something that neither we nor our parents’ generation and even part of our grandparents’ generation could do anything about, simply because they let themselves be blinded? Anyone else, whether German or not, would have done the same thing! If our politicians don’t soon stop apologizing for the actions of generations long dead, either Germany is never going to rise from this humiliating posture or else one day people will again hear (the Nazi call): Germany, awake!!!’”

Jahrgang: »Ohne Zweifel war dies eines der grausamsten Kapitel in der Geschichte der zivilisierten Menschheit, aber sollen wir ewig in der Unterwerfungspose verharren und uns bis ans Ende aller Tage für eine Sache entschuldigen, für die unsere sowie unsere Eltern- und zum Teil auch Großelterngeneration gar nichts können, weil sie sich haben blenden lassen, wie es jeder damals getan hätte, ob Deutscher oder nicht Deutscher! “ ‘Free, proud, and national’ (i.e., ‘patriotic’),’ was what the neo-Nazi NPD demonstrators were shouting in Kiel. (It should perhaps be noted again that the German word ‘national’ is pronounced ‘nazi-onal.’) But what do the Nazis have to do with national pride? In the past, their ideology did nothing but bring destruction on the German nation. They seem to forget how much the Germans suffered in World War Two, so why should they, the contemporary believers in an insane ideology, be able to demonstrate under police protection?”

“When was the last time there was a large, nation-wide demonstration against neo-Nazis in Germany? Have any members of the current German government participated in anti-Nazi street protests in recent years?
“The neo-Nazi party, the NPD, now has members in the state legislature in Dresden. This party, though, has in a way already been represented in the Bundestag for quite a while. This was made obvious by the recent very public flirtation with neo-Nazi thinking by prominent members of two of Germany’s largest mainstream political parties. These individuals proved that it’s not necessary to be a member of a party in order to defend, to spread, or to serve its ideology. A period of sixty years is, after all, rather a long time.”

„Wann hat die letzte große bundesweite Demonstration gegen Neonazis in diesem Land stattgefunden? Welches Mitglied der aktuellen deutschen Regierung nahm in den letzten Jahren an irgendeiner Anti-Nazi-Straßendemonstration teil?
Die NPD sitzt nicht nur im Dresdner Parlament. Die Partei ist schon längst im Bundestag vertreten. Die Affäre Hohmann hat es gezeigt. Die Affäre Möllemann auch. Man muß nicht Mitglied einer Partei sein, um ihre Ideen zu verteidigen, verbreiten, oder ihr zu dienen. Nach allem. 60 Jahre sind schon vorbei.“

“After the recent outburst by neo-Nazi NPD members of parliament in the legislature of the German state of Saxony, almost all German politicians are demanding complete mobilization of the democratic forces in this country. But where are these democratic forces? It’s true that in Kiel the other day there were a few thousand opposition demonstrators. There were more of them than there were neo-Nazis, and they weren’t all left-wing radicals or foreigners, but simply ordinary, courageous Germans. They honor Germany by their efforts, but there were too few of them.
“Where are the millions of Germans who at this time of all times – sixty years after the war and the Holocaust – should be on the streets sending a clear message to the neo-Nazis: ‘We are the German people, not you. Get out and don’t come back’?”

„Nach dem NPD-Eklat im sächsischen Landtag forderten fast alle deutschen Politiker eine globale Mobilisierung der demokratischen Kräfte dieses Landes. Aber wo sind diese Demokraten? Es stimmt: Gestern, in Kiel, gab es ein paar tausend Gegendemonstranten. Die kamen in größeren Zahlen als die Neonazis, und die waren nicht alle „Linksradikale und Ausländerbanden“, sondern mutige, einfache Bürger. Die sind die Ehre dieser Nation. Aber sie sind zu wenig.
Wo sind die Millionen, die gerade heute – 60 Jahre danach – auf die Straßen gehen sollten, um ein klares Signal an die Neonazis zu senden: ‚Wir sind das Volk, nicht ihr! Gute Heimreise und kommt nie wieder zurück’?“
