“Maybe it’s only that the students at Harvard or Stanford look just a little too serious as they rush to their next seminar with their laptops under their arms. Any German who wanders around the Stanford campus for the first time, though, is not completely sure what exactly is different. The malaise of German educational policy seems far away. In one respect, though, that policy is quite close, because Stanford – a half-hour drive south of San Francisco in Silicon Valley – is, along with Harvard, MIT, and Columbia, one of the American addresses most sought-after by the best German scientists.”

Spitzenwissenschaftler wandern ab – aber keine von der Technischen Universität München, oder? – 2
„Vielleicht sind es ja nur die Studenten, die eine Spur zu ernsthaft schauen. Und, den Laptop unterm Arm, zum nächsten Seminar hetzen. Wer zum ersten Mal über den Campus der Stanford University schlendert, der ist sich zwar nicht ganz sicher, was eigentlich genau anders ist – doch die Malaise der deutschen Bildungspolitik scheint weit weg zu sein. Genau genommen ist sie aber ganz nah. Denn Stanford, eine halbe Autostunde südlich von San Francisco im “Silicon Valley” gelegen, gehört zu den begehrtesten Adressen für deutsche Spitzenwissenschaftler; ebenso wie Harvard, das Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston oder die New Yorker Columbia University.“

“And what prospects there are now for the future! It’s not just that a few cowardly members of the mainstream parties vote in secret for the neo-Nazis in the legislature in Saxony. And it’s not just that these few legislative representatives have even now still not grasped the lessons of German history. What is so pathetic and worrisome is the fact that a democratic political party like the majority Christian Democrats do not have either the strength – or possibly the desire – to draw clear lines of demarcation between themselves and those ladies and gentlemen on the extreme right.”

Now, why should they vote for a ‘copy’ – a party that embodies a fake Germany – when they can have the original?’
“The right-wing extremist ‘original’ has found supporters – and in Saxony’s legislature, of all places, among members of the ‘democratic’ parties. The mood in Dresden remains gloomy.”

“Fritz Haehle, Christian Democrat, speaking in 2001: ‘If you just ignore these poor lunatics (i.e., neo-Nazis) or give them enough rope, and nobody pays attention to them, they’ll be finished in Germany.’
“Only Fritz Haehle, now leader of the majority Christian Democrats in the legislature, was ready to be interviewed for this piece. He feels his party didn’t fail, and it has no reason to reproach itself.
“Fritz Haehle also said, ‘Our lines of demarcation were always clear, our attitude toward all extremists was plain to see. There’s no reason for us to reflect on our actions, because we believed that the neo-Nazis were weak anyway, that they were divided among themselves, and things like that.’
“A gross misjudgment – the neo-Nazi NPD is now represented by twelve members of the legislature in Saxony.”

„Fritz Hähle, CDU (16.11.2001) ‚Wenn man diese armen Irren unbeachtet stehen ließe oder ihre paar Meter laufen ließe und kein Mensch schaute hin, es würde zu gar keinem Thema in Deutschland.’
Nur der CDU-Fraktionsvorsitzende Fritz Hähle war zu einem Interview bereit. Ein Versagen sieht er nicht – seine Partei habe sich nichts vorzuwerfen.
Fritz Hähle, CDU-Fraktionsvorsitzender, ‚Also unsere Abgrenzung war immer klar, unsere Haltung gegen alle Extremen war sichtbar, es gab bisher keinen Grund zu einer Auseinandersetzung, weil wir meinten, die sind ohnehin schwach, zersplittert und dergleichen mehr.’
Eine krasse Fehleinschätzung – die NPD sitzt nun mit 12 Abgeordneten im sächsischen Landtag.“

“As long ago as 1996, Andreas Grapatin, Christian Democrat, had already gained attention on the extreme right. That was the year he gave a large birthday party at his home – together with a friend of his, a well-known personality in the right-wing extremist scene. The man’s name was Hans-Holger Malcomess and he was once a guest speaker at an affair organized by the neo-Nazi group – since banned – the ‘Wikingjugend’, the Viking Youth.
“Should anyone then be surprised that the Christian Democrats have often dismissed as left-wing propaganda any danger from the right wing in the legislature in Saxony? The former and current parliamentary leader of the Christian Democrats in Dresden, Fritz Haehle, made the following comment.”

„Schon 1996 fiel CDU-Mann Andreas Grapatin am rechten Rand auf. Damals gab er in diesem Haus eine große Geburtstagsparty – zusammen mit einem Freund. Der war in der extrem rechten Szene gut bekannt – sein Name: Hans-Holger Malcomeß: einst Gastredner bei der inzwischen verbotenen neonationalsozialistischen Wikingjugend.
Wen wundert es da, dass die CDU die Gefahr von Rechts im Landtag oft als linke Propaganda abgetan hat. Es spricht der alte und neue Fraktionsvorsitzende Fritz Hähle.“

You can see, though, how an expression like that condemns itself. It’s an impossible statement, because Heitmann refers to the gas chambers as if they were just some very small peripheral element.’
“In the Saxony state legislature the subject of what happened to the Jews is often discussed. Some members like to mention the murder of millions of Jews in the same breath with the expulsion of Germans from Eastern Europe. Equating various instances of injustice is a typical right-wing extremist approach. Another Christian Democrat legislator, Andreas Grapatin, therefore feels that the post-war order in Eastern Europe consisted of comparable examples of injustice.”

„Prof. Wolfgang Gessenharter, Rechtsextremismusforscher: ‚Ich denke, da muss man nicht sehr viel dazu sagen. Sondern da kann man sagen; ein solcher Satz der richtet sich selbst. Er ist für meine Begriffe völlig unmöglich, weil er eben wirklich mit dem Phänomen der Vergasung umgeht, als ob das so´n ganz kleines zusätzliches Element noch gewesen wäre.’
Im sächsischen Landtag wird übrigens oft vom Schicksal der Juden gesprochen. Da wird der Mord an Millionen Juden gern mal in einem Atemzug mit der Vertreibung der Deutschen aus Osteuropa genannt. Das Gleichsetzen von Unrecht – eine typisch rechtsradikale Methode. Und deshalb findet der CDU-Landtagsabgeordnete Andreas Grapatin, dass die Nachkriegsordnung in Osteuropa aus vergleichbarem Unrecht entstanden sei.“

“Professor Wolfgang Gessenharter, expert in right-wing extremist affairs, says, ’What we’re dealing with here is a strong, massive assimilation of neo-right-wing ideology. What we see is a mixture of things that we’re familiar with in right-wing publications like “Junge Freiheit” or “Nation und Europa” but that should never be thought of in the context of mainstream political parties in a democracy.’
“They are thought of, nevertheless, and they’re expressed out loud. Even by members of mainstream political parties who are still in the Saxony state legislature. By Steffen Heitmann, for example, who was once put forward by the Christian Democrats as their candidate for the German presidency. Heitmann’s preoccupation is the fate of farmers in the former Soviet-occupied zone who were dispossessed by land reforms there, a fate to which Heitmann gives his own peculiar interpretation.”

„Prof. Wolfgang Gessenharter, Rechtsextremismusforscher: ‚Also es handelt sich hier schon um ganz starke und massive Übernahmen eines neurechten Gedankengutes. Es handelt sich darum, dass hier Dinge zusammen gemischt werden, die wir eigentlich so in Zeitschriften wie „Junge Freiheit“, wie „Nation und Europa“ kennen aber eigentlich nicht in demokratischen Parteien gedacht werden sollten.’
„Gedacht werden sie aber trotzdem und auch laut ausgesprochen. Auch von Abgeordneten, die immer noch dem Landtag angehören. Wie Steffen Heitmann – ehemals Bundespräsidentenkandidat der CDU. Sein Thema: die Bodenreform in der Sowjetischen Besatzungszone und das Schicksal der damals enteigneten Bauern.“
