(Enja Riegel’s response continued:) “And of course everyone knows that in our school it’s the students themselves who sweep the floors and keep everything clean. That’s the best solution we’ve found. Besides, the school gets the money we save by doing that: 27,000 euros (33,000 U.S. dollars) in a single year. We use that money to hire actors, directors, singers, dancers, and painters. These people give life to the school. They have no interest in ‘pedagogy’. What they do have, though, is an interest in and a passion for their art, and they want to create something terrific, something that will attract and engage the children, so that they’ll work from morning to evening. That also has an incredible effect on the teachers.”

„Neue Lehrer braucht das Land“ – auch die TU-München? – 89
(Antwort fortgesetzt – Enja Riegel:) „Alle Welt weiß inzwischen, in der Helene-Lange-Schule putzen die Schüler die Schule selber. Das ist das Beste, was wir erfunden haben. Und das Geld bekommt die Schule weiterhin. Das sind 27.000 Euro im Jahr. Von diesem Geld engagieren wir Künstler – Schauspieler, Regisseure, Sänger, Tänzer, Maler. Diese Menschen beleben plötzlich diese Schule. Die haben kein Interesse an Pädagogik. Die haben aber ein Interesse und eine Leidenschaft für ihre Kunst und wollen, dass was ganz Tolles auf der Bühne entsteht und ziehen und reißen Kinder mit sich, so dass die von morgens bis abends arbeiten. Das hat eine unglaubliche Wirkung auch auf Lehrer“.

That not only validates the teachers and what they’re doing, it brings a feeling of joy to the school. Among other things, the physicist doesn’t have to build his bicycles at home any more. He can bring his skills into the school, and we’ve opened up the school to people who aren’t teachers at all.”

(Antwort fortgesetzt – Enja Riegel:) „Auf diese Weise haben wir die Tätigkeiten und das, was den Menschen sonst noch ausmacht, unabhängig von diesen zwei Fächern, in die Schule reingebracht. Das führt zu einer großen Bestätigung der Lehrer und natürlich zu viel mehr Freude. Natürlich, der muss jetzt seine Liegefahrräder nicht immer nur mehr privat zu Hause bauen, der kann das mit in die Schule reinbringen. Und wir haben die Schule geöffnet für Menschen, die gar keine Lehrer sind.“

(Enja Riegel’s response continued:) “We’ve also greatly expanded the activities of new people in the school, in ways that are unheard-of in Germany. There was a woman who had once worked in the hotel field, and she became a subcontractor in our school, as head of a ‘School of Hospitality’. We have so many visitors and now we can welcome them in the best possible way – and they pay us well. Or a young physicist had a special interest. As a hobby, he used to build those bicycles that you ride lying down. I decided to establish a bicycle shop in the school, and he ran it. In this way, we brought into the school not only these activities but also everything else that these people have to offer. (Antwort fortgesetzt – Enja Riegel:) „Und dann haben wir auch ihre Tätigkeiten an der Schule enorm verbreitert. Da hat eine Frau, die mal im Hotelfach gearbeitet hat, in der Schule ein Subunternehmen gegründet, das hieß Schule der Gastlichkeit. Weil wir so viele Gäste haben, wurden die aufs Feinste bewirtet und haben auch gut gezahlt. Oder ein junger Physiker hatte immer so ein Interesse. Der hat privat Liegefahrräder gebaut. Ich habe gesagt, wir machen eine Fahrradwerkstatt. Er hat dann diese Fahrradwerkstatt geleitet. Auf diese Weise haben wir die Tätigkeiten und das, was den Menschen sonst noch ausmacht, unabhängig von diesen zwei Fächern, in die Schule reingebracht. Das führt zu einer großen Bestätigung der Lehrer und natürlich zu viel mehr Freude. “Enja Riegel: I’m working from the assumption that in Germany we have the schools and we have the teachers. What do we do now? I look forward to the day when we’ll have all German children in the same type of school, instead of being sent to separate schools based on their abilities. I’ll probably never see that in this country. But what a school director can do is, for example, to say to the teachers, ‘What can you do yourself? When teachers who want to work in my school come to me, I’ve always asked, ‘What are you really capable of doing?’ I know they can teach two different subjects. And then occasionally they have to think for a while, but then something always occurs to them.”

„Enja Riegel: Ich gehe auch davon aus, wir haben die Schulen jetzt und die Lehrer sind jetzt in der Schule. Was kann man jetzt machen? Ich träume auch davon, dass irgendwann mal alle Kinder neun Jahre gemeinsam in die Schule gehen. Das werde ich in Deutschland wahrscheinlich nicht erleben. Aber, was man in der Schule als Schulleiter machen kann, ist z.B. den Lehrern, die an der Schule sind, zu sagen, Herr Weber, was können Sie eigentlich? Wenn Lehrer vor mir sitzen, die an meiner Schule arbeiten wollten, habe ich immer gefragt: Was können Sie eigentlich? Dass Sie zwei Fächer haben, weiß ich. Und dann haben die manchmal nachdenken müssen, dann sind ihnen aber Sachen eingefallen.“

“Reiner Lehberger: Herr Schleicher, in England they’ve had bad experiences with that kind of flexibility – making it possible for teachers to change jobs easily. There’s a high rate of turnover among school staff. In a lot of subjects schools are dependent on teachers from overseas, on people who come from Australia and want to spend six months in the U.K. teaching mathematics, while they take a break from surfing. That’s no model for us. I think teaching is a profession like medicine or law, where people should assume they’re in it for life. It doesn’t have to be monotonous; it has to change; that much is clear. But I see teaching as a profession that should be followed for a long time by those who take it up.”

„Reiner Lehberger: Herr Schleicher, in England hat man schlechte Erfahrungen damit. Da ist eine hohe Fluktuation. In vielen Fächern leben die dort von Wanderlehrern, die aus Australien kommen und eine Surf-Pause in England machen und ein halbes Jahr lang Mathematik unterrichten. Das ist kein Modell, das ich anstreben würde. Ich glaube, es ist eine Profession, genau wie der Mediziner oder der Jurist, der zunächst einmal davon ausgeht, dass es ein lebenslanger Beruf sein sollte. Er sollte nicht eintönig sein, er muss sich verändern, das ist völlig klar. Aber ich würde schon als Professionalisierung das auch so sehen, dass es ein Beruf ist, der für eine längere Zeit von denjenigen, die ihn ausüben, auch ausgeübt wird.“

Why not an open, transparent profession?”

Warum macht man dieses Berufsfeld nicht anschlussfähig, so dass sich Lehrer auch nach zehn Jahren entscheiden können, noch was anderes machen und umgekehrt, ein offenes, transparentes Berufsfeld.“

(Enja Riegel’s response continued:) “I’d also like to say once again that if we have that kind of conversation with prospective teachers, we also need a phase of introduction to the teaching profession, at least in the first or second semester of teacher training. Those students have to go into the schools to see if the teaching profession, which they thought about when they were school pupils, looks as ideal to them from their viewpoint as future teachers. They have to see if that’s the profession they want to practice for the next thirty or thirty-five years. Otherwise we get people coming to talk to us, after their first state exams, at the age of around thirty, and saying they don’t want to be teachers after all. By that time they’re too old to do anything else. The result is misery for them and for the children they’re teaching.”

(Antwort fortgesetzt – Enja Riegel:) „Darüber hinaus möchte ich noch mal sagen: Wenn wir am Anfang diese Gespräche haben, brauchen wir mindestens im ersten oder zweiten Semester eine Berufserkundungsphase. Die Studenten und Studierenden müssen sehr früh in die Schule, um überhaupt zu sehen, ist das der Beruf, für den ich mich jetzt ideell aus der Schülerperspektive interessiert habe, aus der Lehrerperspektive ein Beruf, den ich tatsächlich dann auch 30 oder 35 Jahre ausüben will. Ansonsten haben wir dann die, die mit 30 ins Referendariat kommen und merken, das ist eigentlich gar nicht mein Beruf. Dann sind sie aber so alt und wegen ihrer Existenzsicherung bleibt ihnen nichts anderes übrig. Und es ist ein Jammer für sie und für die Kinder, die sie unterrichten.“

“Enja Riegel: All those applicants also want to be hired as teachers because teaching positions are permanent civil service positions and as such are – for Germans – among the most sought-after jobs. The question is, do we have the right applicants? We have to make sure of that in the future. In Finland, teachers are actively recruited, and only the best and the brightest are hired. We Germans have to do the same thing. Above all, we have to consider not just the grades the applicants have received, but also, as I’ve already said, whether those applicants have a real interest in children, of whatever age. Prospective teachers have to have a real interest in the development of children and young people. If they don’t have that, then they’re in the wrong job. That has to be made clear – right from the beginning – to anyone who wants to be trained as a teacher. If that isn’t done, then we’re making another huge error.”

„Enja Riegel: Die wollen ja auch Beamte werden. Die Frage ist, haben wir die Richtigen. Da müssen wir in der Tat in der Zukunft ansetzen. In Finnland wird z.B. ausgesucht. Da kommen nur die Engagiertesten und Besten in diesen Beruf hinein. So was müssen wir auch haben. Wir müssen vor allen Dingen nicht von der Note her prüfen, ob sie die Besten sind, sondern das, was vorhin schon mal gesagt worden ist, dass man Interesse hat an Kindern, egal, ob man jetzt einen Sechsjährigen, einen Zwölf- oder Fünfzehjährigen vor sich hat. Man muss Interesse haben an der Entwicklung von Kindern und Jugendlichen. Wenn man dieses Interesse nicht hat, dann sollte man die Finger von diesem Beruf lassen. “Reiner Lehberger: We certainly don’t have a problem in attracting candidates for teacher training. There are enough applicants. At the University of Hamburg we have a fixed number of places for teacher training and for the teaching profession, and that’s true for other many universities as well. So it’s not as if the profession had no future. People are still choosing it. And as we know from the OECD study, it’s also a well-paid job in Germany.”

„Reiner Lehberger: Wir haben ja nicht das Problem, dass wir zu wenig Bewerberinnen und Bewerber haben. Es gibt genug Bewerber. Wir haben in Hamburg einen NC für Pädagogik und für den Lehrerberuf und an vielen anderen Universitäten auch. Also, so perspektivlos ist dieser Beruf nicht. Er wird angewählt. Er ist im übrigen, wie wir ja auch den OECD-Studien wissen, im Übrigen gut bezahlt.“

You can’t say that about the field of education. I don’t think you can blame the teachers for that. It’s the schools that have stood still.”

(Antwort fortgesetzt – Andreas Schleicher:) „Was ich hier nur herausstellen wollte: Die Anreize und Unterstützungssysteme in anderen Berufsfeldern waren so, dass sich diese Berufsfelder entwickeln konnten. Das kann man in der Bildung nicht sagen. Ich denke, das darf man nicht auf die Lehrer abschieben. Das Berufsfeld des Lehrers, der Schule ist im Grunde stehen geblieben.“
