The Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) and others have consistently stated that the central government stole Sikh artifacts, documents, and other materials from the Sikh Reference Library and Museum in the Golden Temple complex in June 1984 prior to the Indian Army attack. This attack resulted in the destruction of the Library, the Akal Takht, the treasury, and the deaths of 4000 to 8000 civilians. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has disposed of a petition, calling for the return of these materials, after the Union government admitted possession and agreed to the return:
The order was passed after the Union Home Ministry filed an affidavit acknowledging that it is in possession of many articles, including books, paintings, rare documents, handwritten volumes of holy Sikh scriptures etc.
The Union Government also expressed its wish to return the material.
The Bench asked the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which had earlier been impleaded as party to the case to approach the appropriate court to reclaim the material.
