Railway Minister Announces New Probe into Godhra Carnage

July 14, 2004 | Comments Off on Railway Minister Announces New Probe into Godhra Carnage

India’s railway minister has ordered a fresh probe into the Godhra train carnage that preceded the 2002 Gujarat pogroms against Muslims.  58 people, many of whom were Hindu kar sevaks returning from Ayodhya, were killed in the carnage:

It is still unclear whether any inflammable material was hurled into the train from outside or whether a short circuit triggered off the blaze.

Mr Yadav told parliament that forensic investigations revealed that inflammable material inside the train had led to the fire.

He said the former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led federal government had not made the forensic report public.

The state is detaining around 56 people in connection with the carnage attack.  Leaders of the Vishwa Hindu Parisad have repeatedly claimed that the carnage was a pre-planned conspiracy, although recent testimony before the Nanavati Commission investigating the carnage has laid doubt to their claims.
