Ministry’s action taken report nearly complete

April 12, 2005 | Comments Off on Ministry’s action taken report nearly complete

The Union Home Ministry alleges it is nearly ready to submit the action taken report (ATR) of the Nanavati Commission to the Union Cabinet for its approval. The Nanavati Commission was appointed to investigate the 1984 anti-Sikh pogroms and submitted its report to the Home Minister in February 2005.

The officials said the Ministry intends to place the report before Parliament in the current session. They refused to reveal the details of the ATR but claimed it contained nothing that could leave the UPA Government red in the face.

Although officials have not revealed the details of the action taken report, they have said that some of the recommendations of the Nanavati Commission have been included in the reports of previous commissions, and that the Minisry has initiated some action in the past. However, since the 1984 pogroms, only nine people have received life sentences for their part in the massacre that killed thousands.
