Police officer arrested for custodial death

Although Sub-Inspector Satnam Singh was arrested on April 21 for the custodial death of Balbir Singh, a Dalit man, the two other accused, Station House Officer Jasbir Singh and Punjab Trading Company owner Mindhi Shah, are still at large. The police say that they have not been able to trace them. Sub-Inspector Satnam Singh appeared in court on April 22 and was placed in police remand for a day.


Dilraj Singh Sandhawalia, the SDM conducting the inquiry into the case, said that he would submit his report in a week, and that the results of the post-mortem examination would be sent to the Human Rights Department. The Senior Superintendent of Police, Arun Pal, states that he has also launched an independent inquiry into the case.
