Triumphalism

ø

Triumphalism
I think I may have added this to the wrong week, but after we talked about The Complaint and the Answer, we discussed the idea of triumphalism, or the idea that God always guides the righteous to victory. However, history has done much to upset these notions. So I put together a slide show with images of desperation to try to capture the sorrow and disappointment that comes with being defeated. The images come from imperialism, Palestine, and Darfur, all infamous locales of suffering in the Mus- lim world. The images and music are supposed to capture the sentiment of The Complaint and essential ask, “We have trusted you, God, so why are we suffering?” A ques- tion that plagues cultures across the globe.

The Prophet

ø

In the shared documents you should see a hip-hop in- strumental that I composed to accompany the reading of a naat praising Muhammad, written by Ala Haz- rat and Allama Iqbal. I believe that hip-hop is a very proficient means of expressing a feeling of triumph,a feeling which I believe is heavily infused into this text. If possible I will recite the poem in class accom- panied by my instrumental. Due to difficulties with my recording equipment I was not able to have my voice on the actual song.

Becoming One

ø

This is a poem I wrote to describe attitudes towards Muslims guided by both ignorance and understand- ing. The scenes of violence describe the fear and distrust after the 9/11 attacks. However, the “awaken- ing” symbolizes obtaining the knowledge that follow- ers of Islam are not to be feared more than any other human being.

I see the fires and feel a flame
Serene sky ignited by moon and star
Unforgivable
My tongue is crushed under the hatred
Too much to express
Becoming Dumb

I see his sword rise high
Sawing, killing, butchering
The countless Innocent

I awake

I see him sleeping next to me
Our breathing soft and in unison
Becoming One
