Announcing the First-Ever Moot Court Competition in Latin America: Law and Sustainable Development

To the Moot Court Board of Harvard University:

It is our esteemed honor and great privilege to announce the First Annual Inter-American Sustainable Development Law Moot Court Competition, which will be held March 17-20, 2011 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We wish to extend an invitation to your law school to participate in the competition by sending a team of up to three (3) members.

Recognizing the need for a competitive forum to advance principles of international appellate advocacy, the Moot Court Board at Tulane University Law School, along with the Law Schools Payson Center for International Development, is collaborating with the Fundaao Getlio Vargas Law School (FGV Direito-Rio) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the law faculties of Universidad de los Andes in Bogot, Colombia, and Universidad Rafael Landvar in Guatemala City, Guatemala, to sponsor the first-ever moot court competition in Latin America. While the main theme is sustainable development, the competition necessarily draws from other areas of law including human rights law, energy law, and environmental law.

Another unique aspect of the competition is that teams will participate in three different languages used in the Americas and the Caribbean, namely English, Portuguese, and Spanish. That is, for the first time, non-English speakers will be able to submit their briefs and make oral arguments in their mother tongue. At oral arguments, simultaneous translation services will allow teams to understand and respond to issues raised by their competitors from other countries.

The registration fee for this years competition is $200. Other information about the competition, including access to this years problem, is available online at http://www.law.tulane.edu/tlsOrgs/mootcourt/index.aspx?id=14321
