“An overview of right-wing crimes in recent years in Torgau-Oschatz – the county where Muegeln is situated – indicates that such crimes have not decreased.
“Kerstin Koeditz of the Left Party, member of the Saxony state legislature: ‘How often are such incidents described as a fight among young people or a kind of bar-room brawl? People simply play down the political, xenophobic, and racist elements in these events and say something like, “Well, things like that happen when alcohol is involved, and we used to be like that too, when we were young.” I don’t think we should make it so easy for ourselves, because you can see a pattern here: local celebrations in the provinces are no-go areas for foreigners’.
“(Journalist:) The police are still looking for perpetrators and witnesses, but no one here wants to speak openly. A lot of people think that having the courage of their convictions could be dangerous.
“Program Moderator: And the moaning and groaning from us in the media will quickly die away without having changed anything – unless economic conditions improve for many in Germany, together with their future prospects.”
SECOND REPORT:
“Program Moderator: ‘Sure, we’re all supposed to have the courage of our convictions. Ever since the recent events in Muegeln, that’s what politicians everywhere have been saying, even Chancellor Merkel. In Saxony, in the town of Muegeln, all the nice people looked on nicely as a mob of fifty hooligans hunted down eight men from India.
“‘But what would we have done in that situation? How would each of us have acted? It’s certainly understandable that we should be asked to have the courage of our convictions, but that’s an easy request for politicians to make.
“‘Responding nobly to cries for help against a force of unreason, multiplied fifty times, can be a life-threatening thing to do.
“‘Our reporters Guener Balci and Reinhard Laska show us what can happen to courageous people in Germany. They also show us that the government, in problematic cases, simply draws back from the sometimes bitter consequences of being courageous’.
“(Journalist:) ‘Darius’s mother and his friends can hardly grasp the fact that he’s dead. They visit his grave in the cemetery in Berlin. He was twenty-three years old, and he was murdered barely three months ago, when he tried to protect someone else. For Darius, having the courage of his convictions meant disaster.’
“Sabine Ekbatani, Darius’ mother: ‘At first it was such a shock that every morning it was like having to watch a movie in mind, a movie of the call from the emergency room doctor, then the attempts to revive him. Even today I still can’t believe it all happened. I keep thinking he’s just about to come round the corner in the green jacket or the cap he always wore’.
“(Journalist:) On the day of his death, Darius met with his friends as usual at Tegel Lake in Berlin. Not far away from where they were, they saw several youths beating a man. Darius jumped up and went to help. At that point, one of the attackers rammed a knife into his back. One of Darius’s friends was a witness, but he wants to remain anonymous, because he’s afraid the attackers will retaliate.
“Witness: All at once, they were holding a weapon – a knife or something – and just acting a little crazy. A normal person couldn’t imagine what was going on in their heads, or what they would do next.
“(Journalist:) All of Darius’s friends are afraid of the attacker’s accomplices now, because they’re running around free. The attacker himself is the only one in prison, since he had previous convictions for a similar offense. Darius’s friends feel abandoned by the authorities.
“Sabine Ekbatani, Darius’s Mother: ‘Darius shouldn’t have had to die. He had a great sense of justice; he risked his life and lost.
“Journalist: ‘Politicians say that citizens should have the courage of their convictions and stand up for what they believe in – how do you feel about that?’
“Sabine Ekbatani, Darius’s Mother: I have to warn people against such a thing. You see what happens if people do that. God forbid there should be another tragedy like this one.’
“(Moderator:) ‘People who stand up for others in this country put their own life in danger. That was true of Darius Ekbatani, and it’s also true for Rainer Neugebauer in Halberstadt, a town in Saxony-Anhalt, Neugebauer and a group of other people tried to defend themselves against right-wing violence recently, after a group of neo-Nazis had threatened a troupe of theatre actors, Neugebauer and his friends wanted to shake the townspeople out of their apathy. For his pains Neugebauer, a university professor, has been cursed by neo-Nazis and called a louse-ridden Jew.”
“Rainer Neugebauer of the Citizens’ Alliance against Right-Wing Violence, Halberstadt: ‘The neo-Nazis attack me because they know I actively oppose them. On Monday, I experience really terrible anti-Semitic outbursts from them.’
“Journalist: ‘What did they say?’
“Rainer Neugebauer: ‘They said, “We have a problem. There’s a rabbi there, infested with lice.” And even when the police came and asked for their ID, the one who’d shouted out that remark said, “It’s true, what I said. They’re not even Aryans”.
“(Moderator:) The police released the neo-Nazis, and the people who were standing around just looked the other way.
“(Moderator:) ‘Rainer Neugebauer feels he’s been abandoned, completely at the mercy of people who send him anonymous, threatening letters: “We’ll be seeing you,” they write.’
“(Moderator:) ‘On its home page, the neo-Nazi NPD’s youth organization has published a ‘wanted’ poster of Neugebauer, with a photo and his home address.’
”Rainer Neugebauer: ‘It doesn’t exactly make you feel safe and secure when you know your picture and address have been preserved forever on a neo-Nazi website’.
“(Moderator:) ‘He expects little help from the police or the authorities, because he’s so often seen the way right-wing violence is played down and the people responsible for it get off lightly when taken to court’.
“Rainer Neugebauer: ‘Our citizens’ group has often had the experience of seeing people attempt to make right-wing violence seem harmless or to play it down. The authorities will say something like, “Well, it’s only a barroom brawl.” Even though there are previous convictions and other indications on the part of the attackers that indicate a neo-Nazi background to the event, the authorities don’t see that, or they just ignore it’.”
“(Moderator:) ‘And the consequences are that young people who have the courage of their convictions and do something against right-wing violence often have to go into hiding afterwards, as here in the Brandenburg area.’
“Unidentified young man: ‘Having the courage of your convictions – yeah, that’s a tricky issue. I ask you, who really has that kind of courage? The average person here is just an onlooker. They see what’s happening, but they don’t do anything. And if you’re the one who does something, nobody can help you, not the police, not anyone. Sure, you can have the police bring charges, but these days the courts won’t do anything. They just let the matter drop’.
“It is in this way that some foreign residents in Germany become fair game. When Abdel, a young black African, was about to leave a city festival in Magdeburg, a group of right-wing extremists insulted him and called him ‘a nigger.’ He didn’t want a fight, so he ran away. The thugs followed and attacked him right in the middle of a crowd of people. No one helped him.
“Abdel, African victim of violence in Germany: ‘I really cried. Even now I feel let down. There were so many people there, and I could have used some help. I was really afraid, so I started to run, but I couldn’t get away from them. When the police finally came, I was the one they arrested and locked in a police vehicle. They treated me really badly. I didn’t deserve that’.
“(Journalist:) ‘Abdel says that he, the victim, was treated like a criminal. He still feels humiliated. In Magdeburg, at the victims’ counselling center, the staff is familiar with this kind of event. The victims are almost never able to find witnesses who’ll tell what happened’.”

(Bemerkung: Die Relevanz dieses Artikels liegt darin, dass eine Vertuschung in einer Kleinstadt wie Mügeln auch in Sachsen, in Sebnitz, passieren kann. Es ist möglich, dass das passierte, zur Zeit des Todes Josephs.)
„Eine Übersicht über rechtsextremistische Straftaten der letzten Jahre allein hier im Landkreis Torgau-Oschatz – der Landkreis, in dem Mügeln liegt.
O-Ton Kerstin Köditz, Die Linke, MdL: Bei wie vielen anderen Vorfällen sagt man: ist ne Streiterei unter Jugendlichen gewesen oder häufig dieses Wort eben ’Wirtshausschlägerei’. Man spielt den politischen, den fremdenfeindlichen, den rassistischen Hintergrund gerne einfach runter und sagt – na ja, der Alkohol, und so was passiert mal, wie waren wir denn früher. Ich glaube, so einfach dürfen wir es uns nicht machen, weil man kann auch ein Konzept dahinter sehen, Volksfeste im ländlichen Raum – Nogo-Area für Fremde.
Die Polizei ist noch auf der Suche nach den Tätern und Augenzeugen. Offen will hier kaum einer reden. Zivilcourage, denken viele, könnte gefährlich werden.
Abmoderation: Das Jammern auch von uns Medien wird schnell verpuffen und nichts ändern -solange sich die wirtschaftlichen Verhältnisse und Perspektiven nicht verbessern.“
ZWEITER BERICHT:
„Anmoderation: Ja, ja, Zivilcourage sollen wir Bürger haben – das fordern seit Mügeln wieder Politiker allerorten, bis hoch zur Kanzlerin. Im sächsischen Mügeln hatten alle braven Anwohner brav zugeschaut, als ein Mob von 50 Randalierern acht Inder jagte.
Was aber hätten wir gemacht? Wie hätte man selbst reagiert? Es ist verständlich, aber auch etwas wohlfeil, vom Bürger mehr Zivilcourage zu fordern.
Gegen 50fach unkalkulierbare Unvernunft wird hehrer Hilfs-Anspruch mitunter lebensgefährlich.
Güner Balci und Reinhard Laska zeigen, wie es mutigen Menschen in diesem Lande ergehen kann – und dass der Staat sich bei den mitunter bitteren Folgen von Zivilcourage im Zweifelsfall zurückzieht.
Seine Mutter und Freunde können es noch immer nicht fassen, ihr Darius ist tot. Sie besuchen sein Grab auf dem Friedhof in Berlin. Der 23-Jährige wurde ermordet, als er einen anderen Menschen beschützen wollte. Knapp drei Monate ist das her. Seine Zivilcourage wurde ihm zum Verhängnis.
O-Ton Sabine Ekbatani, Mutter: ‘Am Anfang hatte ich so einen Schock und es lief jeden Morgen wie ein Film den ganzen Tag: der Anruf der Notärztin, die Reanimation und ja bis heute kann ich es immer noch nicht glauben. Ich denke immer, er kommt jetzt um die Ecke, mit seiner grünen Jacke oder seinem Käppi’.
(Journalist:) Darius und seine Freunde trafen sich am Tegeler See in Berlin, so auch an jenem verhängnisvollen Tag. Sie sehen ganz in der Nähe mehrere Jugendliche, die einen Mann verprügeln. Darius springt auf, will helfen. Da rammt ihm einer der Schläger ein Messer in den Rücken. Ein Freund von Darius wird Zeuge, will aus Angst vor den Tätern nicht erkannt werden.
O-Ton Zeuge: Die haben ja einfach mal schnell eine Waffe bei der Hand oder ein Messer oder so was, und die ticken ja einfach ganz komisch, da kann man ja als normaler Mensch sich nicht in deren Köpfe hineinversetzen und wissen, was kommt als Nächstes.
(Journalist:) Darius und seine Freunde haben Angst vor den Komplizen des Täters, die noch immer auf freiem Fuß sind. Nur der einschlägig vorbestrafte Messerstecher sitzt im Gefängnis. Darius Freunde und seine Angehörigen fühlen sich alleingelassen.
O-Ton Sabine Ekbatani, Mutter: Darius hätte nicht sterben müssen. Und er hatte einen unheimlichen Gerechtigkeitssinn, und er hat sich eingesetzt und hat sein Leben verloren.
O-Ton Frontal21: Politiker sagen, man soll Zivilcourage zeigen, wenn einer angegriffen wird?
O-Ton Sabine Ekbatani, Mutter: Da kann man nur von abraten. Sie sehen ja, was passiert ist. Um Gottes willen nicht noch mal so eine Tragödie.
(Moderator:) Wer sich für andere einsetzt, lebt gefährlich. Das gilt auch für Rainer Neugebauer. Gemeinsam mit anderen wehrt er sich im sachsen-anhaltinischen Halberstadt gegen rechte Gewalt. Noch vor kurzem machten hier Rechtsradikale Jagd auf eine Gruppe Theaterschauspieler. Rainer Neugebauer und seine Mitstreiter wollen die Bürger aufrütteln. Deshalb wird der Uniprofessor von Rechtsradikalen als verlauster Jude beschimpft.
O-Ton Rainer Neugebauer, Bürgerbündnis gegen rechte Gewalt, Halberstadt: Die Rechten pöbeln einen an, weil sie auch wissen, dass ich in diesem Punkt engagiert bin. Am Montag ist mir das passiert mit übelsten antisemitischen Äußerungen.
O-Ton Frontal21: Was sagen die?
O-Ton Rainer Neugebauer, Bürgerbündnis gegen rechte Gewalt, Halberstadt: Die sagen, wir haben ein Problem, da ist ein Rabbi, der ist verlaust. Und selbst als die Polizei dann die Personalien aufgenommen hat, hat derjenige, der das gerufen hat, noch gesagt: Das stimmt ja auch, was ich gesagt habe, sie sind ja nun mal kein Arier.
(Moderator:) Die Polizei lässt die Täter laufen, die umstehenden Bürger schauen lieber weg.
(Moderator:) ‚Rainer Neugebauer fühlt sich alleingelassen. Schutzlos ist er anonymen Droh-Mails ausgeliefert: “Wir sehen uns“, heißt es da.’
(Moderator:) ‚Die Jugendorganisation der NPD hat auf ihrer Homepage einen regelrechten Steckbrief von Neugebauer veröffentlicht, mit Photo und Privatadresse.’
O-Ton Rainer Neugebauer, Bürgerbündnis gegen rechte Gewalt, Halberstadt: ‚Das macht einen nicht gerade sicher, wenn man weiß, dass man auf der NPD-Seite mit Adresse und Bild verewigt ist.’
(Moderator:) ‚Von Polizei und Justiz erwartet er wenig Hilfe. Zu oft hat er erlebt, dass rechte Gewalt verharmlost wird, rechtsextremistische Täter vor Gericht glimpflich davonkommen’.
O-Ton Rainer Neugebauer, Bürgerbündnis gegen rechte Gewalt, Halberstadt: ,Das ist ein Punkt, den wir vom Bürgerbündnis häufiger erleben, dass versucht wird, zu verharmlosen oder abzuwiegeln, indem gesagt wird: „Na das ist ja nur ’ne Wirtshausschlägerei“, oder so etwas – also der rechtsextreme Hintergrund, obwohl einschlägige Anzeichen und Vorstrafen dort drauf hinweisen, nicht gesehen wird oder eben auch nicht beachtet wird.’
(Moderator:) ‚Die Folge: Jugendliche, die Zivilcourage zeigen, müssen sich danach oft verstecken, wie hier im Brandenburgischen.’
O-Ton Jugendlicher: ‚Zivilcourage – na ja, das ist ein heikles Thema, ja. Wer soll den Mut dazu aufbringen, sag ich mal. Der Bürger hier, der guckt zu. Der guckt zu, aber greift nicht ein. Na, helfen kann dir da ja keiner, weder die Polizei noch irgendwer anders. Man kann den zwar anzeigen, aber heutzutage wird so etwas ja gar nicht mehr bei Gericht verhandelt. Das wird einfach fallengelassen’.
So werden ausländische Mitbürger zu Freiwild. Abdel, der junge Schwarzafrikaner, will gerade ein städtisches Fest in Magdeburg verlassen, als er von einer Gruppe Rechter als Nigger beschimpft und beleidigt wird. Er will keinen Streit, läuft weg. Die Schläger setzen ihm nach, greifen ihn an, inmitten einer Menschenmenge. Niemand hilft ihm.
O-Ton Abdel, Gewaltopfer: ,Ich habe geweint. Ich bin so enttäuscht, es waren soviel Leute da. Ich hätte wirklich Hilfe gebraucht. Ich hatte große Angst, bin deshalb auch erst weggelaufen, aber ich konnte denen nicht entkommen. Und als dann endlich die Polizei kommt, nehmen die mich fest und sperren mich ins Auto. Die haben mich wirklich schlecht behandelt, das habe ich nicht verdient.’
(Journalist:) ‚Das Opfer wird behandelt wie ein Täter, sagt Abdel. Er fühlt sich gedemütigt. Das kennt man bei der Beratungsstelle in Magdeburg. Den Opfern gelingt es selten Zeugen zu finden’.“
