Greed

At this moment, I am trying to organize the traffic of thoughts in my head.

I am trying. I am trying.

The green light is at a halt. It has been for a while now… a long while.

But I’m glad, actually; at least a part of me is.

This way I can pass by each vehicle of thought & get to explore each one.

Until I get past each thought, until I get through my traffic of thoughts, until then red light, don’t switch.

________________________________________________________________

Is it true what they say?

That human beings are ‘naturally’ greedy?

By saying ‘naturally’, do those who argue that human beings are greedy, believe that they are created greedy? That in essence, a part of their material being is greediness?

Excuse me, I must rephrase: that in essence, a part of our material being is greediness?

This question tends to lurk in the back of my head. Sometimes, I try to make sense of this concept of human greed, but it just seems problematic to me. If I am persuaded by this concept, then I have accepted this cynical view on people…

On family …

On friends…

On my being.

Whilst I think that it is cynical, others may think otherwise. Those who think otherwise would usually say something on the lines of this: “What can we do? This is reality. This is human nature.”

Could it really be human nature? Could it really?

But one must define what they mean by greed. Within the context of this writing, greed is the drive that leads human beings into committing actions that result in the cost of the innocent. This drive is primarily out of self-interest. This may sound like a vague definition now, but I intend to come back to it in due course.

When it comes to the creation of human beings, the question eventually leads to the Creator.

This is why I reject the concept.

I reject the concept of human beings being naturally greedy because I believe in a Creator who is just. A Creator who created a universe so vast & striking for His creations to explore & wander. A Creator who has given His creations an infinity to discover. A Creator who created His creations to ultimately resemble His qualities.

To be merciful.

forgiving

generous

wise

loving

grateful

just.

I choose to believe this.

I am not ignorant to the other sides that exist, but I choose this over the rest.

I will listen to one’s argument stating that it is part of human nature to be greedy, to be selfish. I will continue to listen to one’s argument stating that human beings are wild animals who clash with each other in order to fulfill their desires & accumulate power.

I will listen to you, my fellow human being; but I will also like to remind you of the greater possessions within you.

& for this reason, I argue that it is not human ‘nature’ that aggravates the killings of the innocent that occur.

It is human creation.

So tell me again how it is in our natural being to be greedy, when we were made to resemble His qualities? The qualities of the Creator who has given us a universe so vast… a universe so infinite…

To those who shed blood, is it greed that makes you do this?

Is it a worldly lust that strips you of your consciousness so as to quench your thirst for power?

& allow me to remind you that this sought for power is temporary,

for everlasting power is that of the Almighty.

Or is it a survival strategy? Or is it – as one may call it – self-defense?

Yes, I am aware that sometimes extremes must be taken.

But ought they be taken at the cost of the innocent?

Do we not value our souls enough to value the souls in others?

How shameless have we become to disregard that life is meant to be taken by the divine sword of the Almighty & not by our own swords?

I am but another soul. I do not hold the right nor possess the power to take another’s life away. Life is brought & taken by the Almighty.

I am but another soul… a soul connected to the infinite souls around.

How shameless have we become that we have forgotten our truth?

Have we forgotten that at some point of time –  before the existence of time –  our souls were one?

From one, we have become infinite,

& from this, universal life has been created.

So, my dearest soul, let us not forget that when we take the life of one by our own swords, we ultimately take our own.

Until next time,

Mohra

“Therefore We prescribed for the Children of Israel that whoso slays a soul not to retaliate for a soul slain, nor for corruption done in the land, shall be as if he had slain mankind altogether; and whoso gives life to a soul, shall be as if he has given life to mankind altogether. Our Messengers have already come to them with the clear signs; then many of them thereafter commit excesses in the earth.” (5:32) The Quran

“من اجل ذلك كتبنا على بني إسرائيل أنه من قتل نفساًبغير نفس أو فساد في الأرض فكأنما قتل الناس جميعاً ومن أحياها فكأنما أحيا الناس جميعاً ولقد جاءتهم رُسلن بالبينات ثم إن كثيراً منهم بعد ذلك في الأرض لمسرفون”
