La Salle College Hong Kong interview tips

August 6, 2008 | Comments Off on La Salle College Hong Kong interview tips

If your son or someone you know is interviewing for La Salle College (喇沙書院), as an alumni I have several important tips to share with you. La Salle College is a very selective Catholic boys school, with a strong old boys network. Every year, thousands of anxious parents approach the school with high hopes, but over 95% of them are disappointed. Of course, there aren’t that many openings to begin with, so don’t take it personal if no offer is made, there are many bright and amazing kids who never attended La Salle. But if you are lucky enough to secure an interview with La Salle College, make sure you ace the interview. Here are some tips for you.

Learn English early on

La Salle College is one of the very few selective high schools in Hong Kong that teach in English. Although students speak in Cantonese in school, all the classes are taught in English. If your son doesn’t speak English well, chances of him being able to do well at LSC is slim. Therefore, the school is always looking for kids who are bilingual or at least can master basic English conversations. For this reason, English class is a great investment if it is your goal to secure a place. A bit of beautiful foreign accent can go a long way. There are many free English learning websites out there and I strong recommend you to go over some of them with your son. The more comfortable he is with English the better chance he has at acing the interview.

Speak with confidence: accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative

This may sound cliche, but one thing La Salle College values a lot is confidence. As long as you don’t overdo it, touting your own horn may not be such a bad idea during the interview. As someone who has been in the system for over a decade, I can confidently tell you that La Salle College really appreciates confidence and outspokeness. Most of the students are street smart people.

Show atheletic and musical abilities
If your son is a star athelete, or can play multiple instruments, make sure he mentions it during the interview. LSC loves great atheletes, in fact, the school constantly competes in inter-school games and it needs student atheletes to win awards.
