Most of my blogging has focused on David Dreier and Russ Warner, and that’s not just because Gen. Wesley Clark has his back. Both will almost certainly be their party’s nominee for November. Nonethless, there are other Republicans, Democrats, and independents running, including Democrat Cynthia Matthews, who came shockingly close to unseating Dreier in 2004. Here’s the complete run down, from the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin:
The Inland Valley’s longest-serving and most powerful congressman is drawing challengers from both ends of the political spectrum. Two Republicans and three Democrats want to unseat Rep. David Dreier, R-Glendora, whose district includes foothill communities between Rancho Cucamonga and La Canada Flintridge.On the Republican side, challenger Sonny Sardo said Dreier has paid lip service to a border crackdown but has consistently put other nations’ interests first by supporting free-trade agreements and in-state tuition rates for illegal immigrants.
“I’m challenging David Dreier because I feel he simply votes the wrong way, regardless of his rhetoric and what his slick mailers say,” said Sardo, a La Canada Flintridge business owner who ran against Dreier two years ago.
Melvin C. Milton, also a Republican, has said he wants to secure the border but may support some form of a guest-worker program for farm workers.
The Air Force veteran and aircraft mechanic from Walnut also wants to eliminate wasteful government spending and reduce the national debt, while also preserving Social Security benefits for the elderly and increasing support for veterans.
On the Democratic ballot, writer and educator Hoyt Hilsman said the United States must make education a higher priority if it is to remain globally competitive. He supports better enforcement of environmental regulations and a tightening of mileage requirements on vehicles to encourage improvements in technology.
The Pasadena resident, whose father was assistant secretary of state under President Kennedy, also supports comprehensive immigration reform and setting a firm timetable for political — rather than military — stability in Iraq, he said.
Cynthia Matthews, a natural resources manager from La Verne, said she wants to increase education funding, fix problems with the Medicare program and take on corruption in government, in part by supporting publicly funded campaigns.
She said she’s most likely of the Democrats to defeat Dreier. In 2004, after talk radio hosts led a campaign to topple Dreier on immigration issues, she came within 11 percentage points of the congressman — making it the closest race of his career.
Russ Warner, a Rancho Cucamonga business owner, said he made the decision at the urging of his son, a veteran of the Iraq war, which Warner said is “the most ill-conceived war that the nation has ever gone into.”
Endorsed by retired Gen. Wesley Clark and several Southern California Congress members, Warner said he wants California to gets its fair share of federal education dollars and will seek to provide access to health care for the millions who can’t afford it.
The winning Democrat and Republican will face Libertarian Ted Brown and American Independent candidate Elliott Graham in November.
You have been focusing on Russ Warner and rightly so. He is the first challenger in a long time that has a real shot in unseating David Drier. I look forward to reading this blog about the campaign while I am no longer in Claremont. Keep up the good work.
