Survival of the Family

Mother’s Day is officially over. OK, at the time of this posting there are technically 8 hours remaining to Mother’s Day…but my parents have left so it’s officially over for me.

It actually went rather well. I met them yesterday in Braintree (the sourthernmost subway stop in the Boston subway system) and then we had Belgian waffles at Bickford’s. Locals will know their TV advertisement campaign: A is for apple, B is for Bickford’s (except with their Boston accent they say “Bick-fids”). This particular Bickford’s is somewhat frightening as it’s connected to a Motel 6. A few years ago when Matt’s mother came up to visit, we shipped her off to my parents for half of her stay. We swapped custody at this Bickford’s. While in the parking lot, we got to observe the trailer trash couple in the next car having sex. Not just heavy petting, I’m talking full-on orgasmic penetration with car rocking. Classy.

Anyway, there were no orgasms with our waffles yesterday. We left completely unsticky, ran a few errands (Petsmart and Stop & Shop) then came to our condo. We brought Dusty outside for the second time in her life and she actually enjoyed it this time. This concerns me as she may start to expect us to play with her outside. oh oh.

Last night we had pizza at Pizzeria Regina (what an extravagant Mother’s Day dinner, huh?) and then came back, played cards, and then watched “The Guru” on DVD. Matt encouraged us to watch it, but then after 5 minutes he realized how sexual the content was and left the room – leaving me to watch an Indian man explore a career as a porn actor, hook up with a porn actress, and talk about sexual liberation. There are also scenes of a cross-dressing make-up artist, a gay kiss/affair and, how could I forget, Christine Baranski’s character and her husband in latex fetish gear.

Fortunately, I don’t think my parents picked up on most of it. After all, these are the people who when watching Muriel’s Wedding asked me “Are they getting married?”.

Gee, Mom – I think the title says it all.

But it was a good time. They were on good behavior, they loved the dog, and they enjoyed our breakfast this morning at Cafe Pompei – even if we did get soaked in a surprise burst of heavy rain as we walked home. There were also only a few questionable conversations about diarrhea, hemorrhoids, obesity and death (normally the conversations get too much for Matt and he has to leave the room).

So, around noon today I drove them out of the city (back to Braintree) where I boarded a subway back into the city and they drove the opposite direction down to Cape Cod.

75 miles…I think that’s a good distance apart for adult children and their parents.

I just had to leave the room when I remembered all of the R-rated elements of The Guru. I just wasn’t comfortable watching it with your 70 plus year old parents. Sorry.
