A Name That Haunts You

While unsuccessfully multi-tasking this morning (eating my oatmeal, disciplining Dusty and watching the news) I heard something like “…pretty woman is expecting…”. I’m guessing they were saying the Julia Roberst is knocked up. Which is great. Good for her and her camera-man hubby.

But why is is that celebrities are given permanent nicknames for a previous role or event from their pasts? We have Michael Jackson as Wacko Jacko (“King of Pop” doesn’t count since he coined that phrase himself), Rosie O’Donnell as Queen of Nice, Billy Joel as the Piano Man…you get the picture.

I mean, I know that Pretty Woman was Julia’s break-out role…but that was 15+ years ago and she’s made countless films since. Why does our society have to find labels for things and, even worse, people. It’s so sad. There must be some lonely guy at every magazine, newspaper, and television network just hoping that somebody dies or gets arrested so his lame pun can be used.

I’m just glad I’m not known as “Gap-Toothed Boy With Big Ear Lobes Who Walks Like a Penguin and Runs Like Barbra Streisand”. That moniker would have hurt.

i love watching you run. i wish i had never pointed out that you run like barbra streisand because you now seldom let me watch you run anymore. it is so cute the way the lower parts of your legs swing out as you run — and that little thing you do with your arms. so cute. …but not very masculine, i guess. but who cares!

I was thinking about this whole Julia Roberts thing this morning. Why, with all that is going on in the world right now, did I hear about Julia Roberts’ pregnancy within the first five minutes of the Today Show on NBC? Was there nothing else in the news cycle from this weekend to report on?

And Karl, you nickname had me laughing for five minutes…

OOOPS! The comment above that was attributed to Matt (“I hate you, Matt”) was actually from me.
