Strange Associations
I received an email this morning that my office is going to have a little party on Friday afternoon in celebration of Halloween and Fly-out Week (a law school phenomenon when classes shut down for 2nd and 3rd year students so they can “fly out” and interview for jobs). The email invitation referenced candy corn.
It’s probably been about two decades since I’ve had candy corn. As a wee lad, I over-induldged myself with candy corn to the point that it made me feel sick. Ever since then, I’ve not been able to even stand the smell of them. This is not a rare thing for me. I’ve had other similar reactions:
*I used to love butter on everything from toast to waffles to “Toasties” to pasta. Once again, as a stupid little kid, I decided that my love of butter warranted eating a stick of butter. So I tried. I didn’t use butter on anything again for nearly 15 years.
*I was watching M*A*S*H while suffering through chicken pox. It was the episode where Hot Lips Houlihan was having this bizarre dream sequence where she was in a white wedding dress and then people started getting injured around her. She was soon splattered in blood. I threw up and haven’t been able to watch re-runs of M*A*S*H since.
*I also have low tolerance for drunk people. About 8 years ago Matt and I were walking along Boylston Street during College Fest, the middle of the afternoon, when this visibly drunk college girl stumbled out of the Cactus Club and threw up in front of us on the sidewalk. I’ve not been able to eat at the Cactus Club ever since.
Fortunately, I don’t hold grudges against people. But I apparently hold grudges against food items and events.

at about age 9, i ate an entire package of bologna…all in one big stack. no bread, no mustard, no nuttin’. i have not been able to stomach it ever since. i don’t remember if i threw up, but i sure was grossed out.
Haven’t touch Hot Dogs since the sixth grade.
Mom fed us one and it tasted awful..
Never again, well especially now that I know whats in them………
For some reason (I think I have blocked out a childhood memory), I feel the same way about those Hostess Sno-balls..those cupcakes covered in marshmallow and coconut. Just the thought of them, or a glance at the store and I immediately get a gag reflex. Same thing for ice cream cakes.
Liverwurst. got food poisoning from it as a kid and havent touched it since…
(((SHUDDER)))
and more recently it was goat cheese, but ive since forgiven it, and love it once again.
eww eww eww even THINKING about eating a stick of butter like that makes me shudder. Probably served you well though since you weren’t putting butter on bread, or vegetables, or who knows what else people put butter on :D.
A stick of butter? Wahahahahahaha! *holding stomach*
Jello. Just the thought of it makes me gag.
