The Sounds of Provincetown

I’m sure most people’s memories of Ptown sounds are ocean waves and seagulls (or quite possibly drag queens and orgasms). I never really thought about it before but it hit me this morning.

The temperature in Boston today is very summer-like (already in the mid-70’s by 10AM) and although not humid, the sunny skies feel hazy. I was walking through Harvard Yard on my way to the office when I noticed a few vans and pick-up trucks heading toward me on the walkways (which are wide enough for service vehicles to the dormitories).

There were loads of people walking on these walkways so we all moved to the right or the left to allow the slow moving vehicles to pass us by. The combination of the summer-like air, the people talking, the low hummmmm of vehicles moving at 5 MPH, and wheels making little popping noises on the asphault brought me right back to Provincetown’s Commercial Street in the summer.

THAT’s the sound I associate with Ptown. If anybody has spent any time there, I’m sure they can relate to the sound I’m describing. And it just put me in the best mood.

Ironically, a friend of mine sort of invited me down to his house in Ptown this week* (but I can’t make it). Maybe I just have Provincetown on my mind. Well, at least I’ll be going there in a few weeks when I’m on the Cape house (and dog) sitting for my parents. It’ll be Dusty’s first trip to Provincetown…and I suspect she’ll be quite popular.

*I may have somehow invited myself, actually. But he did offer!

I do know the sound you mean! I love it up there. Dusty will have a blast. It’s not so summery here anymore though… quite chilly! And cloudy! Back to April!
