Hark Hours Feedback

9

Hello fellow students,

We are writing to seek feedback about the hours at Harkness Commons and the Hark Box.  Restaurant Associates has been in place for about six months now, and at this point they are looking to potentially make adjustments to their hours to reflect the business that is coming in.  We would like to provide RA with some student feedback about the hours at the Hark.  To help us in our continuing efforts to ensure that your needs are fully voiced, we would appreciate it if you would take the time to briefly answer the following questions.  You can give us your feedback by commenting on this blog post or by emailing us at studentgov@law.harvard.edu.  Please make every effort to reply by next Tuesday (2/3) so that we can get your feedback in as soon as possible.

As always, we appreciate your input and welcome any comments or question you have.

Brian

1)  How do you feel about the current hours at Harkness Commons and the Hark Box (the “Hark Box” is the downstairs area that serves as both the Hark Café and Hark Pub)?

2)  When do you most often eat/drink at Harkness Commons?  The Hark Box?

3)  Do you eat breakfast at the Hark?  Lunch?  Dinner?  For each of those meals do you prefer a quick, pre-packaged meal or something made on the spot?

4)  How early/late do you feel Harkness Commons and the Hark Box need to be open to fulfill your needs?

5)  Do you eat at either facility during the weekends?  If so, when?

Student Government Issues Mid-Year Report

ø

Today we emailed our mid-year report to all HLS students (if you didn’t get one, let us know). The report outlines what we did this semester and what we plan to do next semester. But, ultimately, your Student Government exists to serve you. So let us know how you think we’re doing and what we could do better!

Restaurant Associates Feedback

8

Last week I met with Larry Harris, the manager of Restaurant Associates here at HLS, to share some of the feedback we’ve received from you via emails, the blog, and discussions with your Reps.  Here’s what I learned.

Regarding running out of tea, hot chocolate, soy milk, etc. at the free coffee stations.

  • RA is aware of the problem and has taken steps lately to monitor this more closely and to try to ensure things do not run out.
  • Providing fresh milk/cream is, unfortunately, not a viable option because, for health reasons, they can’t put out enough to last for any significant period of time.

People have asked for nutritional information to be posted at the Hark.

  • RA currently has the “balance choice” information posted and improved vegetarian labeling.  Specifically, what nutritional information would people like to see available at the Hark?

Larry will see what he can do about getting Heinz ketchup instead of Hunt’s.

People have asked for non-dairy protein options like humus or peanut butter at the free bagel stations.

  • Humus is not really available in pre-packed, individual portioned packages, and peanut butter, even in such individual portioned packages, presents allergy concerns to those allergic to nuts.

Food labeling concerns.

  • RA has taken steps to improve the consistency of labeling vegetarian items.  Look for improvements in this area and speak up if you don’t see such improvement.
  • Vegan labeling and ingredient labeling has been requested, and these are things RA would like to do, but are surprisingly more work intensive than one might think.  They are looking into trying to make it happen.

Vegetarian options.

  • RA has a goal of always offering at least one vegetarian entree option.  Consistency on this should be improving.  Please let us know if you don’t see such improvement.

Some people have said that they feel the quality of the global station entrees (the serve yourself, rotating entree station) have declined under RA.

  • This is of great concern to Larry, and he would love to here specific feedback from people on how.  What dishes are not up to par?  How are they not so?

Salad bar concerns.

  • Someone requested small containers for togo packaging of salad dressings.  While this seems not super eco-friendly (my editorializing not RA’s), Larry will look into making this happen.
  • Someone also said that, in there experience, the salad bar is not refilled throughout the serving period and that they run out of some items.  Larry said, this is certainly not their policy and he will look into it to make sure that is not happening.

On a more general note, it does seem that RA is working hard to make the food service here more appealing to us.  They make their own pizzas now, use olive and canola oil rather than butter whenever possible, and are very open to feedback.  Give us your feedback here or email Larry Harris directly (laharris@law.harvard.edu) and it will be implemented whenever possible.

As always, your feedback is welcome.

Miscellaneous Issues We’re Working On – Updated

ø

News@law:

Many people have noted that News@law has been coming out quite late.  Later, in fact, than some of the morning event that are listed in it.  The Communications office is aware that this is not ideal and is working on ensuring that it comes out earlier.

Office supplies in the vending machines:

They’re supposed to be there.  If not in all of them, then in enough so that you shouldn’t have a problem finding them.  They should include pens and highlighters at a minimum.  Have you seen these items in the vending machines you go to?  What other items would you like to see?

CORRECTION/CLARIFICATION: the office supplies are only in the snack vending machine in the tunnel to Lewis, and there are only pens and highlighters.  Do you think they should be anywhere else or contain any other supplies?

Tea, hot chocolate, soy milk…

All of these things are supposed to be at the free coffee stations in the mornings.  We are still working with Restaurant Associates to increase the consistency.  Are you finding them consitently?

What else should we be doing for you?

Faculty Student Lunch Program – Lunch slots still available

ø

A quick update on the ongoing Faculty Student Lunch Program.

First, emails are still going out letting students know which lunch they’ve been assigned to.  Second, many students did fill out their surveys “anonymously” and, thus, we were unable to match those requests with the student that submitted them.  If you haven’t heard from us by the end of this week you may want to email studentgov@law.harvard.edu to see if you filled out your poll anonymously.

Third, there are still several lunches with slots available.  If you are interested in attending any of the following lunches, please get in touch with us asap.

Professor Alford: 12/1
Professor Forbath: lunch on Nov.18
Professor Barkow:  Nov. 21, 12:15
Professor Issacharoff: Nov 11 at 5 pm.
Professor Leff: Nov. 19 at noon.
Professor Michelman: Nov. 11 at 1 pm.
Professor Kaufman: Nov. 20 at noon.

Finally, a special thanks goes out to 1L Representatives Jennifer Dein, Marissa Ronk, and Tamara Wyche for their hard work in planning and coordinating these lunches.

Restaurant Associates Feedback Sought

5

We are opening an ongoing discussion with the new food service provider at the Hark, Restaurant Associates.  An important part of that discussion will come from your input.  Drop us a comment or an email and tell us what you think about the Hark and the Hark Cafe.  Like the food?  Don’t like the food?  Want something different?  Love a new element that RA has brought in?  Let us know!

Yet another bagel and coffee update

2

We’ve received a lot of feedback from you guys about various ideas and issues surrounding the free coffee and bagels.  Here’s an update on some of those requests and ideas:

Toasters!  Thanks to your feedback, we now have toasters at the bagel stations on Mondays.  Also thanks to your feedback we have strawberry creamcheese, and the Dean of Students office is looking into getting us peanut butter as well.

We’ve heard a lot of feedback asking for soy milk, regular milk, and hot chocolate available at the free coffee stations.  All of these things are supposed to be available.  Restaurant Associates is going to work on ensuring they are more consistently provided.

We are aware that coffee is sometimes running out in some locations before those of you with 10:00/10:15 classes can get some.  The Dean of Students office is going to work with Restaurant Associates to see if the coffee amounts can be better managed at each location to ensure some locations do not have too much coffee while others have too little.

All of this is thanks to your feedback.  Keep it coming.

New Hark Hours!

1

Beginning Wednesday, November 12, the Harkness Commons will be open throughout the afternoon (2:30 to 5) for snacks, sodas, and prepackaged sandwiches and salads. Larry Harris of Restaurant Associates explained that “We have a rush of students in the afternoon in the Hark Café. Hopefully this will serve the community better.”

Update on Bagels, Coffee, & Snack Cart

5

Here are some updates on issues you’ve brought up about the various free food and drinks around campus.

Monday morning bagels:
Per your request, the Dean of Students office has asked Restaurant Associates to provide strawberry cream cheese with the bagels.  They are also looking into the feasibility of supplying toasters at those same bagel stations.

Free morning coffee:
Some students have been complaining that the free coffee is running out in some locations earlier in the morning than they would like.  We are working on trying to ensure that coffee will last at least long enough to supply those students that have classes that begin around 10:00/10:15.

Construction Snack Cart:
There were no vegetarian hotdogs at the last snack cart.  This, apparently, was not intentional and the Dean of Students office is looking into it.  There should probably be a vegetarian option this Wednesday.  Next week we will move into November and the options will change.

As always, please get in touch with us if you have any questions or comments about any of this.
