Important Things

Here are the top five things you should know about the recent outbreak of the coronavirus:

1- The Flu Presents Greater Danger In The US Than The Coronavirus

It’s no surprise that people are comparing the flue to COVID-19. However, WHO has stated that the new virus is less transmissible than the flu, but a lot of people have built up immunity to the flu. As of now, people don’t have that kind of immunity against the COVID-19, so people are more likely to catch the coronavirus.

The flu is hard to contain because people don’t always show symptoms right away. Yet, they can still spread it rapidly. With the COVID-19, many people don’t show symptoms at all. This is based on info coming out of China.

WHO also says that coronavirus is deadlier than the flu. As of now, the death rate is 3.4 percent, but a large portion of that figure reflects the outbreak in China. The organization has also taken into account the other countries that have been affected by the virus. Bear in mind that this percentage can fluctuate from one location to the next.

Over in China, there has been a decrease in new cases and this may be due to containment measures. Sure, there is a high potential health threat to the public from the new virus, and this goes for both in the US and globally. The flu on the other hand is still having a greater impact on people across the country, and there are doctors that have said people in the US are at greater risk of developing the flu than the novel COVID-19 virus.

However, doctors are still keeping an eye on CORVID-19. Prescription Doctor, who are pharmacists in the UK, said that experts are trying to create drugs that can treat the virus. Not only that, but experts are taking a look at current medications to see if any of them can potentially treat people who have the coronavirus.

2- It May Be Most Contagious When People Are Symptomatic

According to the CDC, there has been sustained spreading from person-to-person in China, but it’s not clear what the mechanisms for transmissions are. There is a lot more to learn in regards to how the virus is transmitted between people, and there is a great need for data to help medical professionals determine at what point people shed the virus. Not only that, but experts need to figure out if the virus is contained by certain body fluids, and whether or not surfaces can become contaminated.

COVID-19 is the most contagious when people are symptomatic (at their most); That is what the experts believe. However, some people may get the virus and have it for awhile before they display any symptoms at all. However, when they do start displaying symptoms, they tend to be mild. As for when symptoms start appearing, it takes typically 2-14 days after being exposed to the virus.

Close contact with those who have the virus appears to be the most prominent way it is transmission. Patients who cough or sneeze can spread the virus via their respiratory droplets and the virus is thought to be spread when people with it touch surfaces and those not infected touch it too. People who are not symptomatic have a lower risk of spreading the virus.

As for who is at the highest risk, those with pre-existing health conditions are at the top of the list. Also, so are the elderly. People of all ages can become infected with CORVID-19.

3- What To Do If You Fall Ill

How severe the virus is ranges from mild to severe. Most cases throughout China did not require people to be hospitalized. There are a few common symptoms to keep an eye out for. These symptoms include:

  • High fever
  • A sore throat
  • Hard time breathing

Patients are being urged to seek appointments with a healthcare provider if they experience symptoms of the virus, such as coughing, fever and a hard time breathing. If they have been exposed to someone who has the virus, then they should visit their doctor or go to an emergency room. The same goes if they have been to mainland China and have developed symptoms of COVID-19.

4- Protecting Yourself

As of now, you can’t be vaccinated for the COVID-19 virus, and flu vaccines won’t prevent you from getting it. There are experts who are working on a coronavirus vaccine, but it can take another year or longer before one is developed. However, there are a few things people can do if they want to protect themselves from getting it.

For starters, you can do the same thing you would do if you had the flu, which you can catch if someone coughs in your direction, sneezes in your direction or when you touch something that an infected person touches. That being said, washing your hands frequently is the best way to protect yourself. Try to avoid any contact with those who are displaying flu-like symptoms. Doing these things will reduce your risk of developing the coronavirus.

Other measures you can take include:

  • Wash hands for at least 20 seconds. if you can’t use soap, then use hand sanitizer
  • Don’t go out if you’re feeling sick
  • Don’t touch your mouth, nose or eyes. When you sneeze, make sure you cover your mouth with a tissue
  • Disinfect surfaces with household sprays. Spray objects that you touch on a regular basis

Also, there’s not much evidence that shows that wearing masks do any good. Most experts don’t recommend wearing mask for the purposes of preventing viruses. Sure, masks offer some sort of protection against fluids, but they don’t really do a good job at filtering out the air you breathe or exhale. Therefore, you probably should rely on wearing a mask to prevent getting sick.

However, if you have symptoms of the new virus, then go ahead and wear a mask. This will reduce the chances of an infected person from spreading the virus. Healthcare workers should also wear masks.

5- Precautions Are Crucial

At the time of this writing, the CDC is continuing to work on response plans and prepare for a potential pandemic. This may include taking actions that involve responding to localized transmission of the virus. If widespread transmission starts occurring, then this may require people needing to stay home from work, stay away from schools and other places where large groups get together.

Secondly, the virus is new and this means that people should be extremely caution. New diseases can sometimes be deadly, and they aren’t always discovered. As of now, the best thing that can be done include screening people who might have the virus or be at risk, spread awareness about the virus and keeping healthy people and infected people separated.

Health interventions can be a good tool too. If you find yourself with symptoms of the virus, then you should see your doctor. Make sure you inform them that you have traveled, if you have traveled. Tell them about anything you were exposed to as well.

Unfortunately, a lot of misinformation has spread as COVID-19 has been making headlines. The best place to get info from are government sources and health organizations that are reputable. These are the types of sources that you can trust.
