Well, that was a msitake
There’s a serious bug in this blogging software. As I’ve complained in the past, I can’t use simple html in the posting window, unless I use Internet Explorer. If I try to blog something using any other browser, all my little ‘s are turned into &’s and ;’s, and hyperlinks lie dead on the ground. I am not doing anything wrong — the fault is in the software. Another example: I’d like to post a Flickr badge in the sidebar, but that’s not possible either, because my blog turns Flickr’s code to gibberish. And incidentally, the Flickr code is good — there are no mistakes in it. I checked (“view page”) on blogs where it’s successfully displayed, and it’s exactly the same as what I’m trying to paste into my sidebar.
This afternoon, somewhat bereft of sleep, I foolishly thought I’d quickly update one little link on that useless “blogroll” page I have (which is actually a “story,” according to this blog software’s categorisation; i.e., it’s not a “post” — here called “news” — it’s a separate page that I can’t create using MarsEdit, the nifty mediating software which has been saving my sanity for the last few weeks …and oops, my free trial is probably about to expire, so I guess I better pay them), I say foolishly because instead of firing up the old IE, I opened the page using Firefox, added Chris Locke’s Chief Blogging Officer, hit the little update button and promptly fried the entire page. Sigh. Hence I spent the past hour in IE, recoding all the links, and now I really hate blogrolls.

Sorry to hear about your blogrolling problems. A blogroll is such an integral part of the blogging process. I hope you don’t mind my using your comments function as an email. I wanted to send you an email but was unable. I changed ISP’s and no longer have your address. I note that you have it protected (a lot of people seem to be doing it these days). Ah blogrolls. It occured to me that I could ditch the sidebar template’s restriction by just adding the links at the very end… Might try that, one day when I have nothing else to do (ha!).

I’m sorry you are having such a time of it. I wish I could help but I can’t even do my own. Somebody else had to do mine. It seems everyone is having much trouble these days with everything internet. I miss snail mail…

Hey, Kate, thanks. It’s partly my fault for not taking it to the Thursday Evening group that meets in real space at Berkman. It’s on my to-do list, but you know how things get… Crazy.
Yes, I did hear about Paul Martin opting — or should we say, “waffling” — out of BMDS (or whatever the acronymn du jour of the latest folly is). He sorta hedged his bets, though. Canadian companies can still get involved, and Canada remains a part of NORAD, etc. etc. But I am so glad it’s official, or as a CBC commentator put, artistically ambiguously gotten out of (or something like that). And Paul Celucci can go stuff it. I didn’t like him when we lived in Massachusetts (he was guv’nor or some such for a brief moment) and I don’t like him now, when he’s the US Ambassador to Canada and I’m in BC.
This whole BMDS thing is so nuts. Talk about a race to the bottom…. (Except for the defense contractors, I guess.)

I don’t believe you, Herr Raser — there are no pictures of me on the internet, except for what I put on Technorati and Flickr. I used to have a picture on the sidebar, but took it off when my hair got too long (the picture showed me with cropped hair). The reason I look all different on the Tecnorati picture is because of lens distortion, which I much prefer to the au naturel look.
