“Canada is the only major country that doesn’t have a national housing strategy, the report notes.” The article deals specifically with Toronto and Ontario, but most of what it argues holds for every desirable (and expensive) city (including Victoria) in Canada. Affordable housing is apparently one area that the Canadian democracy fails to match the welfare state-ish developments of the rest of the West. Sounds like they’re onto it though.

Every province and territory, except Ontario, has made at least modest gains in raising housing funding from 2001,” says the national report card on housing to be released tomorrow on the eve of a provincial housing ministers’ meeting in Vancouver Wednesday.
